Amy Adams Recalls Her Awkward Encounter With Late Singer Whitney Houston While Working At The Gap

Before Amy Adams became, well, Amy Adams, she had a regular job just like the rest of us. But instead of flipping burgers at a drive-thru, she worked at the Gap. During that time, Amy had a hilarious first encounter with late singer Whitney Houston when she worked a greeter at the store’s front door, and during a new interview, Amy recalled the unforgettable experience.

“They put me as the greeter and I just did everything I was supposed to do, even if I didn’t want to,” Amy, 44, recalled to James Corden during a Late Late Show appearance on Wednesday, Jan. 9. So when Whitney unexpectedly walked through the door, Amy had to greet the star using the “Gap Act.” She explained that the acronym means “greet, approach, product information, add-on, clothes, [and] thank.” But unfortunately, Whitney wasn’t feeling Amy’s attitude.

“She went back into the dressing room and requested anybody else,” Amy joked to James on the show. The actress even gave the audience her best “Gap actor” employee impersonation to show how friendly she was when she met Whitney. “‘Hello, welcome to the Gap. Is there anything I can help you with? Let me tell you about our T-shirts that are on sale,'” she recited, but her “nice girl” routine seemed to impress the audience more than it did Whitney.

Not letting the experience get her down, Amy just laughed it off. “I agreed that I was annoying, but I couldn’t stop doing my job,” she joked. It wasn’t until Amy got her next job working as a waitress at Hooters, that she got the chance to redeem herself.

“I saw Bono walk through, not Hooters, but the hotel that we were attached to and I was, like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m pretty sure that’s Bono from U2,’” she gushed. “And so all the girls rushed him and I felt really bad for telling and I think he could tell I felt bad, so when I rushed him, he actually gave me a kiss on the cheek and I was like, ‘I’m never gonna wash my cheek again.’” Neither would we, Amy!
