Legendary Singer Bette Midler to Perform ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Song at Oscars

An icon will be at the Academy Awards. Bette Midler took to Twitter on Saturday, February 16, to announce to the world that she will be at this year’s show as a special guest performer to sing “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns.

The 73-year-old shared the great news on the social media platform, saying, “So, (drum roll) Ladies and Gentlemen, I will be chanteusing (that’s singing) on the Oscars on Feb 24 … the nominated song from Mary Poppins … ‘The Place Where Lost Things Go’ … so excited!!”

The tune, which was performed by Emily Blunt in the film, is one of the five that has been nominated for Best Original Song. The hitmaker isn’t a stranger to the Oscars stage as she is a previous nominee herself, landing Best Actress nods in 1980 for The Rose and in 1992 for the film For the Boys. Plenty of fans were excited over the Hocus Pocus star’s announcement, including one legend’s daughter.

“Perfect for you! It’s a lovely song!” Frank Sinatra‘s daughter, Nancy, 78, said. At the moment, four of the five Best Song nominees are scheduled to perform during the awards show including “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, “I’ll Fight” from RBG to be performed by Jennifer Hudson, Kendrick Lamar and SZA‘s “All the Stars” from Black Panther and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, to be sung by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.

Originally, only “Shallow” and “All the Stars” were set to be performed on stage, but now that more will be allowed it is good news — news that Lin-Manuel Miranda should be all about as he voiced his displeasure about the Academy’s original decision.

“The 1st time I stayed up to watch the Oscars, it was because I LOVED The Little Mermaid & they were going to sing songs from the movie I loved on The Oscars,” he recently tweeted. “If true, and Poppins’ song won’t be performed, truly disappointing. Hostless AND music-less? To quote Kendrick: Damn.”

But that’s not the case anymore! The 91st Academy Awards will air live on February 24, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on ABC.
