‘Blue Bloods’ Is Officially Getting an Offshoot With Donnie Wahlberg in Boston, CBS Announces
Blue Bloods is officially getting an offshoot, and a beloved member of the Reagan family is set to star!
On Tuesday, February 18, CBS shared a press release saying that Donnie Wahlberg will be starring in an expansion of the hit police procedural drama. According to the press release, the new show has been given “a straight-to-series order” by CBS. The show was not developed as a spinoff, but rather an offshoot of the original series.
Currently, the working title of the show is Boston Blue. Donnie, 55, will be reprising his role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan, which he played in Blue Bloods for all 14 seasons. CBS also teased the plot of the upcoming series.
“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the press release says.
The show is slated to premiere during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
“BOSTON BLUE is produced by CBS Studios in association with JBTV. Brandon Sonnier & Brandon Margolis will showrun and executive produce. Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed and Wahlberg will also serve as executive producers,” the press release continued.
Speculation first came that there would be some kind of continuation of the franchise when Donnie revealed that he was interested in continuing his role as Danny
“There’s been a lot of talk about spinoffs, about various spinoffs, all types of concepts of spinoffs. I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of Blue Bloods and done with the care that we tried to put into Blue Bloods every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way,” the New Kids on the Block singer told TV Insider in October 2024. “I’ve heard stories of prequels, sequels, you name it. For me personally, I love the show. I’ve enjoyed working on it for 14 years and like I said, whatever comes next, as long as it has family at its core and the spirit of Blue Bloods, then I’m all for it.”

The final episode of Blue Bloods season 14 aired on December 13, 2024. Viewers saw Danny Reagan ask Maria Baez out for pizza after a candid chat with Henry Reagan about finding someone to share his life with.
Ahead of the series finale, Donnie told Closer that the idea of a Blue Bloods spinoff was still being tossed around at CBS.
“It’s been discussed,” he said. “I’m sure it’s been discussed in multiple formats and multiple areas with multiple people.”
“But you know whatever’s going to happen with the spinoff is going to have to be done thoughtfully and carefully,” the singer added. “That’s quite a legacy to live up to after Blue Bloods. And if the show doesn’t carry on some of those magical elements of Blue Bloods, then I think it would be a disservice to the show. So, it’s really just it’s being talked about.”
Luckily, fans have finally gotten their wish with the Reagan family favorite headed back to our screens very soon!
