So Cool!Boy George Says Upcoming Biopic Based on His Life Is ‘Thrilling’ to Him

It’s time to bow down to Boy George, mister! MGM recently announced that a biopic will be produced about him after Bohemian Rhapsody, about Freddie Mercury and Queen, raked in more than $900 million at the box office — and the English musician couldn’t be more excited!

After the news was announced, the 57-year-old took to social media to gush about the project. “A MOVIE! @mgm_studios Thrilling,” Boy George wrote in a recent Instagram post.

MGM announced that Sacha Gervasi will write and direct the film based on the life of the “King of Everything” singer. The biopic, news of which also comes just days after Elton John‘s Rocketman was released in theaters, will be produced by Kevin King Templeton and Paul Kemsley.

“There is no filmmaker better suited than Sacha Gervasi to tell George’s confessional story with the irreverence and emotion it deserves,” Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM’s Motion Picture Group, told Deadline. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with both of them to bring this remarkably honest and wildly entertaining tale to audiences around the world.”

In the film, MGM — who is also producing the Aretha Franklin film starring Jennifer Hudson, Respect — will explore Boy George’s humble beginnings as the son of two Irish working-class parents. The film will also highlight “The Crying Game” singer’s rise to the top of the international charts with the ’80s band Culture Club.

Throughout his years of superstardom, Boy George has sold over 100 million singles and more than 50 million albums as a solo artist as well as with Culture Club. On top of his musical accomplishments, the Grammy Award-winning artist is also the author of two bestselling autobiographies and the coproducer, songwriter and actor of Taboo on Broadway and London’s West End.

The film’s director couldn’t help but gush about the experience of getting to work on this project. “As you can imagine, George’s life story is wickedly entertaining, yet also poignant and inspiring,” Sacha said. “I’m both honored and excited to be the one to guide it onto the big screen.”
