Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas Live ‘Grandparent-Style Life’ After Actor Turned 80
Catherine Zeta-Jones is doting on husband Michael Douglas now more than ever, but a source exclusively tells Closer that she’s recently had to come to terms with his lack of energy.
“Has Michael slowed down?” asks a family friend of the actor, who celebrated his 80th birthday last month. “Absolutely, and a lot of his and Catherine’s life together is a negotiation around how he chooses to use his time.”
The Wall Street star and the Chicago actress, 55, have been married since November 2000 — but after nearly 24 years of wedded bliss, life has drastically changed.
“He still loves acting, but he also loves traveling [with] just him and Catherine,” the source explains. “Vacations are really important to their family, more so right now than what acting jobs they take.”
While the insider points out that the lovebirds “still present as a very sexy, vibrant couple,” they add that Catherine and Michael “live a more ‘grandparent’-style life than people think.”
The source reveals, “Michael has put a lot of things aside, like his once-vibrant career as a major film producer, to enjoy the quiet life at home: the early dinners, the early bedtimes and the Sunday afternoons just lounging by the pool. Thanks to their amazing careers, he and Catherine have more money than they can possibly spend and only have to work when the job sounds fun or involves working with their old friends.”
Throughout their careers, Michael and Catherine have seemingly made all of their dreams come true.

The actress has won an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award and a Tony Award, and the actor is the recipient of two Academy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the AFI Life Achievement Award.
“They both have Oscars and infinite respect, so what’s left except riding off into the sunset as Hollywood legends?” the source asks. “They’re still one of the most-liked couples in Hollywood, but to say they have slowed things down in the 2020s is the understatement of the century!”
Though Michael may be less active than he was in the past, the actor has no plans on going anywhere anytime soon.
Earlier this month, a separate source told Closer that Michael is “determined to live until 100 or around that mark.” Additionally, he doesn’t take things for granted after a bout with cancer that almost ended his life.
“People tend to forget he had cancer, but Michael remembers his horrendous ordeal — the chemo, the nausea and pain — and lives in constant worry of getting sick again,” said the source.
“That’s why he’s changed his life around — to keep that fear from becoming a reality,” the source added. “He sticks to a gluten-free diet and avoids booze, cigarettes and caffeine. He won’t even have dessert for the most part because he’s cut way back on sugar. Plus, he gets regular check-ups and takes vitamin supplements to boost his immune system and exercises every day to keep his stamina levels up and maintain muscle mass.”
