Craig Melvin Wipes Tears From His Eyes as Crowd Chants His Name During Touching ‘Today’ Episode

It was a rather emotional day for Craig Melvin on Today on Thursday, November 14, as he was officially named Hoda Kotb’s replacement in the show’s early morning hours.

The announcement was celebrated by the Today cast and crew and fans who gathered outside on the plaza. In a video posted on Today’s Instagram page, the crowd could be heard chanting Craig’s name as he stood with his colleagues. The broadcaster wiped a tear from his eye as he got ready to film another segment.

In Instagram Stories following the announcement, Craig’s wife, Lindsay Czarniak, got emotional as she celebrated her husband’s latest achievement. She explained that she couldn’t be there in person because she was flying back home from Los Angeles.

“So I have friends and my husband’s assistant sending me videos. I am crying because I am just so proud of Melvin and happy for him,” Lindsay said in a video as she was on the plane.

Later on in the day, Lindsay posted a lengthy caption on her account gushing over how proud she was of Craig.

“My heart is honestly bursting. Craig Melvin – I am so proud of you and so beyond grateful for the man you are,” she wrote. “I almost announced the Today Show news on the intercom so the fellow passengers on my plane would know why I’m crying.”

“I am overwhelmed by the emotions that have come along with watching this morning’s announcement of you being named the new co-host of the Today Show,” the Fox Sports reporter added. “I think seeing the news become official alongside your TV family has made it hit home even more what a true blessing this is.”

Craig and Lindsay have been married since 2011 and share two children, Delano and Sybil.

“The opportunity to watch the person you love see their dream come true is such a gift. I will never forget this day and the crowds’ excitement to share your good news,” Lindsay continued. “I shouldn’t be surprised, because I cry at sports all the time, but seeing you realize this dream has made me so proud of the way you carry yourself as a father, husband, friend, son, brother, colleague, etc. You have shared so much about the village that got you to this point, but truly it’s the way you care for and “show up” for the people in your village, that makes you so special.”

The sports reporter said that she is “proud” that Craig is the same person at home as he is on TV. “Warm, caring, curious, smart, funny, snacking on all the food being prepared,” she said.

“I know this job is equal parts rewarding and demanding, but you always put your best foot forward even when you’re tired,” Lindsay continued. “Coaching hoops, reading books, tackling kids during tickle wars… just hanging. I’m excited for America to get to ‘hang’ with you more each morning and to see how your God given gifts can continue to help others.”

Hoda, 60, will mark her final Today episode on January 10. Craig will step into his new role as Savannah Guthrie‘s coanchor on January 13.
