Did ‘Good Bones’ End? What Happened to the HGTV Show After Behind-the-Scenes Drama
Good Bones became an immediate hit when the show entered the HGTV scene in 2016, with Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine starring in the home renovation series. Fans are begging for an update on the series and wondering if the show has officially ended for good after drama between the costars ignited behind the scenes.
Did ‘Good Bones’ End?
Good Bones has officially ended. Season 8 was marketed as the show’s final season.
“Today, I filmed my last few pickups for Good Bones. Not Good Bones season 8, but for Good Bones. So it is officially … That’s a wrap, folks,” Mina said during an episode of her “Mina AF” podcast in August 2023.
“It’s the end of an era,” she said. “I mean, I had to say goodbye to some people today that I have spent my last almost 10 years with.”
Season 8 consisted of 10 episodes, with the finale airing in October 2023, which saw Mina’s brother Tad Starsiak get engaged to Anna Spiars in his newly renovated home.
Fans Learned of the Drama Between the ‘Good Bones’ Castmates
Amid the show’s final season, Mina revealed that she and her mom and brother were going through a rough patch.
“My mom and I aren’t in a great place,” she said on her podcast. “My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind of like nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
The businesswoman said that her family drama brought along some challenges while filming season 8 of Good Bones.
“There were definitely some challenging [moments] because my mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been,” she told People in September 2023.
She said that she and Karen got into a “knockdown drag-out [fight] during demo.”
“I was like, ‘I wonder if anyone’s going to be able to tell,’” she said. “And of course, you can’t because that’s the idea. People . . . that’s not why they’re tuning in to watch Good Bones. That’s not what they want.”
On a later podcast episode, Mina said that she repaired her relationship with her brother William. In November 2023, Mina made remarks on the “Tea With Alice” podcast about why she and Tad had a falling out.
“I have given him so many opportunities in life because of all of the hard work I have done,” she said. “I have shared those opportunities, and they were never owed to him, but he very much acts that way and treats me that way, and then said some really s–ty things that ended with, ‘Sucks to suck.’”
“But right now, all he has done is tell me he is engaged and that I’m probably not invited to his wedding,” she continued. “Which is fine because I’m 39 and I’ve been to a lot of weddings. I don’t want to go to anymore.”
In January 2024, Tad posted a video on Instagram talking about why he started his own business.
“I had to start it quick because I didn’t have the best break with the last business I worked for, and I had just bought a house like two weeks before I left, so not having any income, I had to decide what to do whether to go work for somebody or start my own business,” he said.
The comments flooded with speculation that he was talking about Mina, while others came to Tad’s defense.
“He would not speak out against Mina. Not his nature,” one person wrote in a comment, to which Tad responded, “This!” with a raising hands emoji.
In August 2024, Mina announced she was taking a break from her podcast, which is largely where she gave updates on her family dynamic. She has not returned to the podcast as of publication.
A Special Shortened Season of ‘Good Bones’ Aired
Just when they thought they had seen the last of Mina and Karen on Good Bones, a special shortened season of the show was announced. The limited season showed Mina renovating her new lake house while her mom worked on her new Wilmington, North Carolina, home. The pair did not appear in the episodes together, but merely the projects were filmed separately. The episodes aired in August 2024. There was no talk of their family drama in the episodes.
