Malia Obama Has Officially Started College — but Does She Have Secret Service?
Former first daughter Malia Obama has officially started college, so many fans are wondering one thing: does she have secret service? Turns out that even though her father, Barack Obama, still gets secret service, the 19-year-old no longer walks around with tight security these days.
Barack and his wife, former first Lady Michelle Obama, moved their little girl into Harvard University this week, and although it was a pretty normal situation overall, secret service joined them. However, they were only there to “technically” protect Barack and his wife.

So, why’s that? Back in 2013, former President Barack Obama re-signed an act called the Former Presidents Act that would give lifetime secret service protection to himself and all Presidents after him. Prior to that, it was only protection for 10 years, and before 1997, it was lifetime protection. This also includes lifetime protection for their spouses. However, it limits the protection of children over the age of 16. That said, Malia is too old, and their younger daughter Sasha just turned 16 years old in June.
Even though Malia is past the age limit, we’re sure Barack and Michelle have someone looking over her out in Massachusetts! The couple previously opened up about their oldest child going off to college.

“It makes no sense. Michelle and I are way too young to have daughters who are both almost in college now. So as a parent, [I’m] a little freaked out,” he said. Before leaving office, he talked about his girls growing older. “They’re ready to get out of the nest. We don’t think they’re ready, but they certainly think they’re ready. The fact that their parents’ house is the White House may add to it. But Malia’s going off to college. She’s a grown woman.” Good luck, Malia!
