Doris Day was not only a beloved performer but also a trendsetter and fashionista. The actress-singer was known to exude a timeless elegance with her chic and polished ensembles, some of which included tailored dresses, blouses and button-up coats, as well as gloves and pearl necklaces.

As a talk show host and animal advocate, she carved out her own path in Tinseltown and established herself as a glamour icon. Doris’ sense of style has influenced couture for decades with her own unique flair and sophisticated touch.

“Her on-screen personality — her posture, her makeup, her costumes — was the whole package, and what American women of the late 1950s and early 1960s were trying to emulate,” Christina Johnson, associate curator for the FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising museum, said, per the Los Angeles Times.

Doris died at 97 in May 2019 and continues to have generations of admirers.

1954

In the mid-1950s, when Doris starred in melodramas, including Young at Heart and The Man Who Knew Too Much, famed studio costume designer Edith Head took advantage of the star’s narrow waist and dancer’s legs by costuming her in sleek, belted A-line dresses and skirts.

1955

“Dressing up is often achieved by dressing down,” said Doris, who spent most of the 1950s playing girl-next-door roles. Her wardrobe represented what people saw on Main Street, USA.

1960

The actress’ natural playfulness was often reflected in her clothing choices. With a short red coat and black patent accessories, she made the “mod” look that was all the rage in London in the swingin’ ’60s her own.

1961

In 1961’s Lover Come Back, she played one of the big screen’s first single and successful businesswomen — and her clothing reflected it. The always ladylike actress wore a white dress, matching gloves and a playful hat in the film.

1962

“I want to wear beautiful clothes and look pretty,” Doris famously said.

However, no matter how trendy or popular, this famed animal welfare activist refused to wear real fur. “Fake furs are fun and should be the only furs we put on our backs,” she insisted.

1965

Doris made a big entrance in the 1965 romantic comedy Do No Disturb wearing a stunning orange sequined dress created by famed costume designer Ray Aghayan. Her white coat even sported a matching sequined liner!

1970

The star of television’s The Doris Day Show greeted the groovy new decade wearing a shiny pink cape and matching hat. “Put on your body only that which looks good on your body,” Doris said.

1989

Doris accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” at the 1989 Golden Globes dressed in a gorgeous Valentino suit paired with a high-collared ivory silk blouse.
