Ellen DeGeneres Sadly Announces That Her 92-Year-Old Father Elliot Has Passed Away

Fans know Ellen DeGeneres as a source of fun, positivity, and support, but on Jan. 11, she was the one that needed a shoulder to cry on. "This week, at the age of 92, my father Elliott DeGeneres passed away," she revealed on Twitter alongside a clip from her show. "He lived a good long life. It wasn’t unexpected. I was able to say goodbye." Our hearts are breaking for the talk show host.

"Yesterday I said that I have a lot going on in my life," she explained on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "In addition to [the mudslides] in Montecito, I lost my dad this week." While mourning her father, we got to know a lot more about Ellen's childhood and upbringing.

"He lived his life exactly as he wanted," she continued, "He was Christian-Science his whole life, he never had medicine, never went to a doctor, I never had a vaccination, and he lived to be 92. He was very proud of me. He loved this show and he was a kind man, very accepting, there was not one bone of judgment in his body. He was very funny, I think my brother Vance and I got our sense of humor from him."

Though Ellen was clearly choked up, she got to honor him in a very special way. "Now I work on the Warner Brothers lot and I have my own stage with my name on it, so he was really proud of that," she said. "Before he passed away, I got to talk to him, so I got to say goodbye to him. I left the building and I looked back and there was a rainbow over the Warner Brothers studio. He died ten minutes later after that. Pretty amazing." We're so glad that Ellen will always have that special last memory of him. Rest in peace, Elliot.
