Gwyneth Said It’s Been Hard

Two years after Gwyneth and Chris called it quits, she opened up about coparenting with her former lover at the #BlogHer15 conference. “It’s hard and I would never judge anyone for doing it any way,” Gwyneth said. “Just, for us, we thought if we could maintain the family even though we’re changing the shape of it, it would be, that would be our ideal scene and so, that’s what we’re trying to do.”

“And it’s been hard, and you know, like, we’ve gone through really difficult times with it but we’ve always said these children are our priority,” the actress added.

So Far, So Good

In 2016 Gwyneth told Entertainment Tonight, “You have to constantly let go. You have to let go of old ideas, old resentments. You have to put the kids first, which I think people have the idea of that, but then oftentimes, you struggle with it.” She continued, “If you once loved the person enough to have kids with them, you have to focus on what you still love about them and what’s beautiful about them and all the good aspects of your relationship. You still want a family, you’re just not in a couple. So, I acknowledge we’ve done it in an unorthodox way but it’s working for us.”

Coparenting at Thanksgiving

Chris and Gwyneth had no problem getting together with their kids to celebrate Thanksgiving in 2016. Gwyneth even shared a photo on her Instagram of Chris and then 10-year-old Moses with the caption, “Here’s to reunions, togetherness, family and love love love. Happy Thanksgiving Eve, everyone. Love, GP.”

Gwyneth Gives Herself Credit

In the February 2017 issue of InStyle, Gwyneth said her former husband was at her house “every single day” to coparent their two children. She also revealed Chris would “take a bullet for her.”

Brotherly

“He’s really like my brother,” Gwyneth told Stephen Colbert about Chris during a January 2018 appearance on The Late Show. “We’re very familiar. It’s nice. I think we genuinely wanted our kids to be as unscathed as possible. And we thought, if we could really maintain the family even though we weren’t a couple, that was kind of the goal. So that’s what we’ve tried to do.”

More Love on Social Media

For Chris’ 41st birthday in March 2018, Gwyn shared a photo of her, the kids and her ex-hubby and wrote, “Happy birthday my brother. Thank you for giving me these two.”

So Happy Together

In November 2018, Chris and Gwyneth attended the Broadway musical Waitress with their children, so it’s clear there is no bad blood between the pair. “Gwyneth and Chris looked happy together and their kids too,” a source previously told Us Weekly. “They seemed to love the show. The kids were singing along and they looked like one big happy family.”

It’s Not Always Easy, But They Make It Work

While stopping by The Drew Barrymore Show in September 2020, Gwyneth got candid about coparenting with Chris and said “it’s not as good as it looks” some days.

“It’s like you’re ending a marriage, but you’re still in a family. That’s how it will be forever,” the Goop skincare creator explained. “We have good days and bad days, but I think it’s driving towards the same purpose of unity and love and what’s best for [our kids].”

“We have this idea that just because we break up, we can’t love the things about the person anymore that we loved and that’s not true,” Gwyn added, noting her relationship with the singer post-divorce is “better than” their marriage ever was. “So I think that it can be done,” she marveled.

All Together

Chris and Gwyneth posed with Apple at her high school graduation ceremony in June 2022. “Congratulations to all the graduates, especially Apple Martin,” the entrepreneur wrote next to the family snapshot.

Still So Close

“Happy birthday to the sweetest father and friend. We love you,” Gwyneth captioned a March 2, 2023, selfie alongside Chris with wishes from herself and their children.

Family First

“I just always say, to say you want to put your kids first and actually to put them first are two different things. I think we all think we want to put our kids first, but when it’s sort of … you’re making a sacrifice or you feel angry or hurt, sometimes it’s hard to do that,” Gwyneth told People in November 2023.

She continued, “Everybody who had come from a divorced house, they said, ‘It wasn’t really the divorce. Of course, it was hard to go back and forth to different houses, but that wasn’t really the thing that messed me up. It was that my dad wouldn’t come into the house to pick us up, or my mother would drop us at the end of the driveway or they couldn’t even be together at graduation.'”

“Those were the things that really hurt the kids,” Gwyneth explained. “And so Chris and I just said, ‘Let’s just never do that and let’s try to get through the hard part of this and remember our friendship,'” adding her ex was still “like my family.”

‘Sweet’ Parenting

“[He] has a real sweetness, and so he brings that to the way that he parents them … he’s sort of gone a lot, he’s on the road a lot, but brings – it’s almost like he comes and sprinkles fairy dust,” Gwyneth told the publication in the same interview about Chris and their children.
