Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and the Rest of the Royals Surprisingly Can’t Eat One Popular Food

Sisters-in-law Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle seem to have it all, but they interestingly can’t eat one of the most popular food items in everyone’s diets. During a new interview, Kate and Meghan’s royal mother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, revealed that members of the monarchy aren’t allowed to eat… garlic.

“I hate to say this, but garlic. Garlic is a no-no… You always have to lay off the garlic,” Camilla, 70, told MasterChef Australia judge Gary Mehigan during a recent chat, adding that royals shouldn’t eat garlic because it could give them bad breath.

In the past, it has been reported that Queen Elizabeth hates garlic and has banned it from being served at her Buckingham Palace home. “We can never serve anything with garlic or too much onions,” former royal chef Darren McGrady once dished to RecipesPlus. “We also couldn’t serve meat that was rare, as she liked her meat more well done.”

Another former royal chef named John Higgins echoed McGrady’s comments on the Queen’s distaste for garlic to the National Post. “The Queen is a wonderful lady, the royal family are wonderful people but they’re missing out on garlic because at Buckingham Palace you don’t cook with garlic. I suppose, in case you get the royal burp,” he divulged.

Funnily enough, garlic is far from the only food the British royals are discouraged from eating. While traveling, Kate, Prince William, Meghan, Prince Harry, Camilla, and Prince Charles aren’t allowed to enjoy shellfish or any kind of raw meat so they do not fall ill with food poisoning. They’re also forbidden from enjoying tap water for the same reason.

The Buckingham Palace dinner menu will also allegedly never feature pasta as a main meal (that’s reserved for special occasions and holidays!) or potatoes and rice as side dishes. Fascinating, right?!
