‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot Is in the Works: What We Know About the Football Series So Far
Do the Dillon Panthers have another championship run up their sleeves? A Friday Night Lights reboot is in the works, per multiple outlets, and we cannot wait to see the team take the field again.
Who Is Returning for the ‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot?
Showrunner Jason Katims is on board to return for the reboot. While the show is only in its beginning phase, Variety reported that several of the original series’ main cast members, including Kyle Chandler and Jesse Plemons, are not expected to return.
Connie Britton previously expressed that she did not understand why anyone would make a reboot of the sports drama series.
“I heard that they’re making another Friday Night Lights, which I find bizarre,” she said on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards in September 2024.
Other stars of the original series seemed to be interested in a possible revival.
Zach Gilford, who portrayed quarterback Matt Saracen on the show, said that he thinks a reboot is a good idea “even if I’m not a part of it.”
“What made that show was the authenticity,” Zach said during an interview with Us Weekly in May 2024. “As long as there was some storyline that wasn’t contrived to bring a number of the characters back together, I’m all for it.”
“But if it was just some very contrived way of getting the band back together,” he added. “I think it would diminish what that show was.”

Taylor Kitsch, who portrayed Tim Riggins, told Variety in July 2022 that he did not want to be a part of a Friday Night Lights reboot.
“You may see it, but I will not be a part of it,” he said. “I’m done. I’m good. I want to keep growing as an actor. Going back to Rigs — let him live in everyone else’s memories. Whatever that is, whatever he means to them, let him lay there,” he said. “It was such a huge springboard for me, but I’m such a different actor now. It allowed me to explore the process, be f–king green and embrace it.”
Since Friday Night Lights, several of the show’s cast members have become huge stars, including Kyle. It was reported by multiple outlets that he will be portraying Hal Jordan in HBO’s DC series Lanterns.
Michael B. Jordan also shot to fame after portraying Vince Howard on Friday Night Lights, ultimately starring in Fantastic Four, Creed and Black Panther.
What Will the ‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot Be About?
According to Deadline, the story of the reboot will focus on high school football, much like the original series, which ran from 2006 to 2011.
The show was inspired by the 1990 book of the same name, which was written by by H. G. Bissinger. It was adapted into a film in 2004, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Tim McGraw and Garrett Hedlund. Connie also appeared in the film before starring in the TV series adaptation.
