Gabrielle Union Reveals Why She Had Husband Dwyane Wade Sign a Prenup - Closer Weekly

When it comes to her marriage to professional basketball player Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union isn’t afraid to discuss anything.

So when asked if she had her husband, 33, sign a pre-nup before they tied the knot in August 2014, the 42-year-old actress had no problem replying with a definitive, “yes.”

“Now that it’s time to get married to a man who happens to play basketball and has done well for himself, I want to make it clear that I have in no way hitched my wagon to his star. I have my own wagon and star,” she said in a new interview.

“For women in Hollywood, when they’re coupling, everything is about the brand. Everything is about latching on to a rising star, so you can kick your heels up. That’s never been my story, ever,” Gabrielle continued.

Dwyane proposed to Gabrielle with a reported 8.5 carat, $1 million engagement ring.

When Dwyane — whom the ‘Think Like a Man’ star began dating in 2009 — proposed in December 2013, Gabrielle revealed she felt it was necessary for the couple to protect their individual assets through a prenuptial agreement.

“I make sure to let people know all of the hard work that’s gone into my career. I want people to know the work that it took to get through UCLA, that I had student loans and worked. I was eating Top Ramen and lived well below my means,” she told ‘Yahoo! Style‘ of her rise to fame.
