Did You Notice The Golden Globe Awards Got A Makeover This Year? Get The Details On The Revamped 2019 Statues

All of the glamorous stars at the 2019 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 6 definitely turned heads. But there was another important aspect of the night that also caught everyone’s attention — the awards! Did you notice that the Golden Globes statues got a major makeover this year? Because they totally did!

The coveted trophies’ updated design was unveiled to the public on Friday, Jan. 4, just a few days before the Golden Globes ceremony took place. According to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s official website, the new awards were entirely gold while the older versions featured the gold globe atop a rectangular stone base.

“The redesigned Golden Globes are longer, leaner, and more golden — a spectacular 24-carat gold-plated design, retaining the heritage and history of the previous iconic Golden Globe with wrapped filmstrip accolade enhanced by modern touches,” the website explained. The new awards actually came in two different versions: the all gold statue for film and TV winners and a trophy with a black base for the Cecil B. DeMille honor and the recently created Carol Burnett award.

The updated statues also grew in overall size, too. The old Golden Globes measured 10.75 inches tall and had a base width of 3.5 inches while the new awards are 11.5 inches tall and have a 3.75-inch wide base. The previous trophies also weighed just over 10 pounds while the new versions weigh 2.3 pounds less at 7.8 pounds — interesting, right?! Additionally, the redesigned Globes feature a special “proof of authenticity” that makes each award unique that includes the winner’s name, award category, and the year it was presented to the honoree.

This year’s big Golden Globes winners included Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk, Glenn Close for The Wife, Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody, Olivia Colman for The Favourite, Christian Bale for Vice, Mahershala Ali for Green Book, Patricia Arquette for Escape at Dannemora, Darren Criss for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Sandra Oh for Killing Eve, Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Michael Douglas for The Kominsky Method, and Patricia Clarkson for Sharp Objects.
