Idris Elba Just Seemingly Addressed Those Rumors He’s Playing 007 in Future James Bond Movie
Fans might not like this. For years, there have been rumors that Idris Elba would become the first black actor to play 007 in a James Bond movie. However, we’re not so optimistic that the handsome star will be succeeding Daniel Craig anytime soon.
Idris, 45, took to Twitter on Sunday, Aug. 12 to write, “My name’s Elba, Idris Elba.” But we want it to be James Bond! He followed up with another tweet that read, “Don’t believe the HYPE…”

During a 2011 interview, Idris told NPR that he wasn’t interested in playing the role. “I just don’t want to be called the first black James Bond. Do you understand what I’m saying?” he said. “Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”
Idris has thrown fans for a loop though, because after a controversial segment by show host Rush Limbaugh in 2014, he seemed to have changed his mind on the matter.
“James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is,” Limbaugh said at the time. “But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is.” He concluded, “I know it’s racist to probably point this out.” Ouch…
After that, Idris was asked during a Reddit AMA if he would ever take on the role. “Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely,” he said at the time.
Perhaps Idris isn’t interested in the role at this time because he’s currently busy planning his wedding to his fiancé, Sabrina Dhowre. Truth is, we’re here for his wedding or his James Bond movie (or both)!
