Inside ‘Speed’ Costars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock’s Bond: They’re ‘Truly Just Good Friends’
They’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera,” Sandra Bullock said on the “50 MPH” podcast last year, during a special talk for the 30th anniversary of their hit 1994 movie, Speed. “It does feel like it’s — there is a siren call to it,” Keanu Reeves agreed. “I would love to work with you again before our eyes close.”
Now they — and their fans — have finally got their wish. The A-listers have signed on to costar in a new romantic thriller, which Amazon MGM Studios describes as “propulsive,” according to a May 2 report in Variety. “They like the script, and they think the fans will enjoy it,” says a source, noting that Keanu famously declined to return for 1997’s heavily panned Speed 2, and the pair’s 2006 time-travel romance, The Lake House, wasn’t as successful.
“Working together was always on the agenda, but the right project just wasn’t there. This is something they’re both on board with, and they’re excited about sharing the screen again.” Offscreen, their connection never wavered. Sandra and Keanu, both 60, “have worked at staying in touch all these years,” says the source. “It comes very naturally to them. Their friendship has actually gotten stronger over the years.”
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock Have ‘Huge Hearts’
They’ve both been through a lot. “They’ve been cheerleaders for each other through many highs and lows in the business,” says the source, “but they’ve also been there for each other through love and loss in their personal lives as well.” Keanu’s daughter with girlfriend Jennifer Syme was stillborn on Christmas Eve in 1999; Jennifer was killed in a car accident two years later. Sandra, whose marriage to Jesse James fell apart in 2010 after a very public cheating scandal, can relate: She lost her partner of eight years, Bryan Randall — whom she described as “the love of my life” — to ALS in 2023.

“They have a lot more in common than people realize,” says the source. “They’re survivors. And while they both have huge hearts, they also put up a guard. Once they let you in, they love you forever.”
And each other. The stars, who’ve admitted to having crushes on each other while filming Speed, never dated, “but they do consider each other family,” says the source, adding that Sandra is friendly with Keanu’s girlfriend, Alexandra Grant. “She understands their connection and would never get in the way of that.” Nor should she worry, adds the source: They may have off-the-charts chemistry, “but they are truly just good friends who will be bonded for life.”
