Is ‘Outlander’ Coming Back for Season 8? What to Know About the Show’s Fate After Season 7
Is the Outlander cast headed to the Scottish Highlands for another season? Starz revealed the fate of the historical drama series after season 7.
Is ‘Outlander’ Coming Back?
Outlander will be returning for season 8, which will be the show’s final season. In November 2024, Starz began airing the second half of the 16-episode season 7. Season 8 will have 10 episodes.
“For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz, said in a statement. “But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”
The premiere date for season 8 has not been announced.
Outlander author Diana Gabaldon revealed that she told star Sam Heughan about how the series will end, however, she did not tell Caitríona Balfe.
“Sam knows the ending, but why didn’t you tell Caitriona? Weird,” one person wrote on X, to which Diana responded, “There was no reason to. There was a reason Ron and Sam should have known.”

What Happened in the Season 7, Part 2 Premiere?
It’s a loaded question, but Jamie, Claire and Young Ian returned to Scotland to reunite with their family at Lallybroch. They learned that the elder Ian Murray was dying from consumption. Claire said there was nothing she could do to save him. Jamie also reunited with Laoghaire to make a different arrangement regarding his payments to her, as well as giving the OK for Joan to join a convent.
Despite his father’s declining health, Ian decided to go back to America to profess his love for Rachel. Claire went with him to perform surgery on Lord John Grey’s nephew. Brianna and Roger also faced some drama of their own when their son, Jeremiah, went missing with Rob Cameron, prompting Roger to go back through the stones to search for them. It turns out, Roger ended up in the wrong time period, meeting Jamie’s father and a younger Jenny at Lallybroch. He was puzzled and couldn’t figure out why he didn’t end up in the right time period. Viewers will just have to wait and see how he gets himself out of this mess.
Inside the Prequel Series
It was confirmed that a prequel series was in the works about Jamie and Claire’s parents. The show is titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Jamie’s parents, Ellen Mackenzie and Brian Fraser, will be portrayed by Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy, and Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, will be played by Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine.
“We’re thrilled to be telling the stories of these two couples,” Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said in a statement. “The origins of their relationships explore universal themes that transcend time periods and we’re so excited for fans to discover and fall in love with these characters and their love stories the way they have with Claire and Jamie.”
