Forty-six years ago, First Lady Jackie Kennedy famously wed Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in an intimate ceremony overseas.

By 1968 — five years after her husband President John F. Kennedy's assassination — Jackie was already known as a bonafide fashion icon. But after marrying Aristotle, her style changed from preppy and polished to sophisticated and ultra-chic. Known as the 'Jackie O' era of wide-legged pants, head scarves and over-sized sunglasses, this look endures in fashion to this day.

Jackie Kennedy married Aristotle Onassis on Oct. 20, 1968 in a Greek Orthodox ceremony on Skorpios in the Ionian Sea, the island owned by her billionaire shipping magnate husband.

She wore a lace-covered beige dress by Italian designer Valentino for her second nuptials. It became the fashion house's most successful couture piece ever.

Jackie was spotted in a pair of sunglasses and a fashion-forward fringed sweater while leaving a restaurant in NYC with her husband in the fall of 1969.
