Jane Fonda, 80, Thought She Would Die “Lonely and an Addict”

At age 80, Jane Fonda is candidly reflecting on life. And forget about lasting eight decades, the actress never thought she would even live to 30!

“I never pictured 30,” she told People in a new interview. “I assumed I wouldn’t live very long and that I would die lonely and an addict of some sort. I didn’t think if I did live this long, that I would be vibrant and healthy and still working. I’m grateful.”

Jane had a tumultuous childhood with her mother committing suicide when she was only 12 years old after battling mental illness. “She suffered from mental illness, what would today be called bipolar [disorder],” Jane once shared. “When a parent isn’t around, the child assumes it’s her fault. And that’s what I did.” Jane also suffered from bulimia when she was a young girl.

She was also married three times, but none of the marriages worked out. She was hitched to Roger Vadim from 1965 until 1973, to Tom Hayden from 1973 until 1990, and to Ted Turner from 1991 until 2001. “If you don’t feel seen, safe or celebrated, get out,” she told the news outet of marriage.

She’s also a mom to three kids, Mary, 50, Vanessa, 49, and Troy, 44. She shares that one of her biggest regrets in life is not spending more time with them. “I tell my kids I’m sorry,” she said.

But today, the Grace and Frankie star is most proud of her inner self-improvement growth. “I’m thankful that I’ve gotten better over the 80 years,” she says. “I’m less judgmental. I’m forgiving. It wasn’t always true. I’ve really worked hard to get better as a human being.”

In fact, Jane shared in a recent interview that she’s the happiest she’s ever been. “When people say, ‘When were you your happiest?’ I would have to say now. I get more than eight hours of sleep every night; I meditate twice a day; I eat right; I work out,” she shared. You go, Jane!
