See Renée Zellweger Transform Into Judy Garland in the New Trailer for ‘Judy’
The legend of the late Judy Garland is being brought to the big screen in Judy, starring Renée Zellweger in the title role. The film, which also stars Bella Ramsey as Lorna Luft, Gemma-Leah Devereux as Liza Minnelli and Darci Shaw as the young Judy, is set in London in 1969 where the iconic performer has come to perform in a run of sell-out concerts at the Talk of the Town. Her last concert performance ever would be in March of that year in Copenhagen. The film will reportedly not include her death at the age of 47 from “an incautious self-overdosage” on June 22, 1969. Her death was ultimately ruled accidental and not suicidal.
“When there’s a better understanding of what it takes for a person to continue under certain circumstances, there is a level of empathy and respect that you can’t help but feel,” Renée, 50, said in an interview with People about getting into Judy’s mindset. “What she had to overcome in a time when women didn’t necessarily feel that they had power over their own lives in the way that we do today. That stayed with me and I hope folks will be moved by that as well.”
Renée was most recently seen in the Netflix thriller series What/If, which began streaming on May 24. Look for Judy on September 27.
