Kathy Bates Rips Up Her Golden Globes Speech After Losing Award to Shogun’s Anna Sawai
At the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, Kathy Bates once again proved how iconic she is. The Matlock actress was seen ripping up her acceptance speech after she lost the award in her category.
Kathy, 76, was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series — Drama at the ceremony on Sunday, January 5, for her role in Matlock.
It was Shōgun actress Anna Sawai who ended up bringing home the award. After Anna’s name was announced, Kathy was seen ripping a piece of paper while sitting at her table.
In her acceptance speech, Anna ended up giving a shout-out to Kathy after the viral moment.
“I have so much people to thank but I’m gonna keep it short, thank you to the voters for voting for me even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” she said, causing the crowd to laugh. “Thank you to our incredible writers, without a good script, it’s impossible to give a performance to our fullest, full potential. Thank you. Everyone else – I’m gonna thank you later.”
Others nominated in the category were Emma D’Arcy for House of the Dragon, Keira Knightley for Black Doves, Keri Russell for The Diplomat and Maya Erskine for Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Kathy looked great while attending the ceremony, showing off her weight loss while wearing a gray blazer and black slacks with a matching black purse. While it appeared she was wearing sneakers, it turned out to be Sneex, a luxury hybrid sneaker with a heel. Her gray hair was fastened in a ponytail.
The Misery actress also took the stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actor and Actress of a Television Drama with Anthony Ramos.

“I’m just a kid from the projects in Brooklyn and here I am presenting at the Golden Globes with the legendary and beautiful Kathy Bates,” the In the Heights actor said on stage as Kathy stood next to him with her arm wrapped around his arm.
“Thank you. Thank you, Anthony, that’s so sweet,” she responded.
Anthony then asked her three things she would suggest to artists to help them achieve “having a career with longevity.”
Kathy said, “No. 1, Money goes in escrow or you don’t show. Unless it’s Spielberg,” which drew laughs from the crowd. She also advised everyone to be nice to the PA’s and to grab snacks and water from the craft table when they wrap filming at night on location because “hotel minibars are a scam.”
Kathy’s appearance was only just one of the highlights at the ceremony, which saw Hollywood’s finest gather to celebrate the great film and television releases of 2024. The night’s big winners included Demi Moore, Colin Farrell, Kieran Culkin, Sebastian Stan and more.
Shōgun won big at this year’s Golden Globes, with Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada winning for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama, respectively. The show also won the award for Best Television Series — Drama.
