Katie Couric’s New Memoir Reveals How She Overcame Tough Times in Her Career
Her warmth and wit made Katie Couric a beloved TV news star, but underneath her public persona lay an insecure person who prevailed against the odds in a male-dominated field. “Women tend to put themselves down because they feel uncomfortable with power and accomplishment,” Katie previously admitted on the Thrive Global Podcast.
The former Today cohost’s upcoming memoir Unexpected will detail how she survived self doubt, an eating disorder and the cancer death of her first husband. “I’ve experienced so much, both professionally and personally, but have never really had an opportunity to reveal what was going on behind the scenes,” Katie, 62, once said in a statement, who will also share tales of her time on Today with Matt Lauer. “I can’t tell you how many married men were having affairs with underlings,” she previously confided to People.
When the journalist began covering news in Washington, D.C., in 1979, she hid a secret. “I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” she has admitted on her talk show. “It makes you feel really bad about yourself.”
The sexism she encountered at work also fed her self-doubt. “She’s successful because of her hard work, intelligence and breast size,” a TV exec once said of Katie at a meeting.
In her book, due out in 2021, Katie will reveal the true strength it took to rise to the top. “The road less traveled is sometimes fraught with barricades bumps and uncharted terrain,” she has said. “But it is on that road where your character is truly tested.”
According to publisher Little, Brown and Company, the television personality’s book will show her fans a new side of her that the public has never seen before. “I’m excited to share what it was like being at the center of so many historic events and game-changing stories,” Katie once said. “I’m also ready to talk about the fascinating and sometimes challenging people with whom I’ve worked, the radical transformation of my industry and the heartbreaking losses I’ve endured.”
