Liza Minnelli, the only daughter of Golden Age icon Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, grew up in the limelight.

The actress began performing at a young age. She made appearances on her mother’s variety show The Judy Garland Show and eventually made a name for herself on Broadway, winning Tony Awards for her performances in Flora the Red Menace and The Act.

As the oldest child of the Wizard of Oz actress, Liza is half-siblings with Lorna Luft and Joey Luft, Judy’s children with businessman Sidney Luft. Like Liza, Lorna became an actress. Liza’s brother, Joey, is also an actor, though these days he has remained mostly out of the spotlight.

1967

Liza’s first marriage, pictured here, was to Australian showman Peter Allen, who rose to fame in 1959 as half of the singing duo The Allen Brothers. Their divorce was finalized on July 24, 1974. Liza’s second husband, Jack Haley Jr., was the son of Jack Haley, who played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz alongside Judy. The two were married on September 15, 1974, but they divorced in April 1979. The Sterile Cuckoo star’s 13-year union with sculptor and stage manager Mark Gero marked her longest marriage. They wed on December 4, 1979, until their marriage ended in divorce in January 1992. Her final marriage was with concert promoter David Gest. The pair tied the knot on March 16, 2002, but separated in July 2003. Their marriage ended in divorce in April 2007.

1972

Liza is probably best known for playing Sally Bowles in the 1972 musical film Cabaret, a performance that earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.

1984

In 1984, Liza starred alongside the legendary late actress Chita Rivera in The Rink. She received a Tony Award nomination for her performance.

Though Liza has appeared in numerous Broadway productions, she made a grand return to Broadway in a solo concert at the Palace Theatre titled Liza’s at The Palace…!, which ran from December 3, 2008, through January 4, 2009. She received a special Tony Award for Best Theatrical Event for the production.

Liza made a special appearance at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, when she presented the award for Best Picture alongside Lady Gaga.
