Mara Wilson Explains The Impact ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Had On Her Life

It has been 25 years since Mrs. Doubtfire was released — the hilarious and heartwarming story about one man (Robin Williams) who is willing to do anything and everything to be with his kids. Even if it involves dressing up like an old woman and pretending to be a nanny all while his wife in the film, Sally Field, has no idea. But even as the years have gone by, the movie has continued to be popular, even impacting the life of Mara Wilson, who played the youngest child in the film, Natalie.

Once Mrs. Doubtfire was released, Mara became a big time child star as she went on to star in Miracle on 34th Street and Matilda. Mara recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss just how much of an impact Mrs. Doubtfire had on her.

“It was my first movie audition,” Mara says of Mrs. Doubtfire. “I remember it was Valentine’s Day and I came home and my mom was on the phone saying, ‘I’m not sure, I don’t know if that’s a good idea.’” Eventually Mara became top choice to play Natalie, and met with her other siblings in the film, Matthew Lawrence and Lisa Jakub.
