Meghan Markle Baptized Into the Church of England During Secret Royal Ceremony (REPORT)

It’s official — Meghan Markle has been baptized into the Church of England! The special event happened during a secret ceremony in the Royal Chapel at London’s St. James’s Palace on the evening of Tuesday, March 6, according to a new report. Meghan’s baptism was allegedly only attended by Prince Harry, Prince Charles, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and the 45-minute service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Meghan, 36, was additionally confirmed immediately following her baptism, which means she is will now be able to join Harry, 33, during Holy Communion, the Daily Mail revealed on Wednesday, March 7. A royal source additionally shared that Meghan’s baptism service “observed the full ritual of the Church with holy water from the River Jordan from the private royal family font poured on Miss Markle’s head.”

In accordance with tradition, Meghan also reportedly had two sponsors — sort of like adult godparents — present during the ceremony. Though it is not publicly known who the former Suits star‘s sponsors were, it is believed that one person was a close female friend of Meghan. It was reported earlier this week that Meg’s parents, Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle, would be traveling to the UK to attend the ceremony, but it has since been alleged that neither Doria nor Thomas was in attendance.

The venue for Meghan’s baptism is a very special church for the royal family. Not only was the Royal Chapel at St. James’s Palace the location of Prince George’s October 2013 baptism, but it was also where Princess Diana‘s body was kept for a week before her September 1997 funeral. Though Meghan allegedly did not need to become an Anglican to marry Harry in a church, the royal-to-be reportedly chose to be baptized in the Church of England out of respect for Queen Elizabeth‘s official role as Supreme Governor of the church. Congratulations to Meghan on this religious milestone!
