Meghan Markle’s Latest Givenchy Dress Proves She’s Found the Perfect Royal Tailor

When Meghan Markle walked down the aisle of St George’s Chapel in a simple and classic bateau-neck gown by Givenchy’s creative director Clare Waight Keller, she surprised us all — and set the agenda for bridal trends in seasons to come.

Fast-forward one month to the new Duchess of Sussex‘s first royal engagement with Queen Elizabeth, and it appears that Meghan and the British designer have already forged an important fashion partnership that looks set to define the former Suits star’s new royal style.

For the visit in question, which saw Meghan travel overnight to Cheshire with Her Majesty on the royal train (a rare honor that is yet to be bestowed on her husband, Prince Harry, or her in-laws, Prince William, and Kate Middleton), the Duchess chose a caped shift dress in cream by the French fashion house, paired with a narrow belt, simple black clutch (both by Givenchy), and heels by Sarah Flint. A simple, fuss-free silhouette is fast becoming a hallmark of Meghan’s style, while the cape is a Givenchy staple, and this outfit perhaps proves that Waight Keller is set to become Meghan’s trusted tailor for key royal events.

It’s not uncommon for royal women to stick to what they know when it comes to occasion dressing (and if you had Waight Keller, previously creative director at Chloé and Pringle, on speed-dial, you’d make the most of it, surely?). Since designing Kate’s wedding dress back in 2011, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton has become the Duchess of Cambridge’s go-to designer for high profile events.

Whether it’s the BAFTA red carpet, a christening or the most recent royal wedding, Kate keeps coming back to McQueen, who typically dress her in structured coats and shifts in block colors, worlds away from their more ethereal runway aesthetic. The Queen, meanwhile, typically opts for coats by couturier Stewart Parvin, or designs by her wardrobe advisor, Angela Kelly.

“She’s a strong woman. She knows what she wants, and it was really an absolute joy working with her,” Waight Keller said after Meghan’s wedding gown was revealed to the world. Here’s to the start of a very stylish relationship.
