Mika Brzezinski Is ‘Mourning the Loss of the Last North Star’ After Jimmy Carter’s Death
Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski shared an emotional post on her Instagram page after the death of former President Jimmy Carter.
Jimmy died on December 29, 2024, at his Plains, Georgia, home, surrounded by his family.
“The giants in my life are gone .. With the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, I am mourning the loss of the last North Star who was truly a guiding light for the world, and also my family,” Mika, 57, captioned a carousel of photos on her Instagram account on December 30.
In the first photo, Mika was seen kneeling in front of Jimmy and his wife, Rosalynn Carter. Rosalynn died on November 19, 2023, at age 96.
“In the first photo, you see Jimmy Carter, next to his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright-a close family friend and mentor,” she wrote. “This photo was taken at the funeral of my father, Zbigniew Brzezinski.”
The rest of the photos showed Jimmy with Mika’s late father, who passed away on May 26, 2017, at age 89, during his years as a political diplomat.
“President Carter’s remembrance of my dad was beautiful, heartfelt, and quite funny,” Mika reflected. “They had a unique bond. Along with my mother, these were the people who carried a giant vision for the world, a dedication to service, and by their example, challenged all of us every day to do better. I am blessed to have known and learned from them all.”
“Jimmy Carter‘s entire life is an example of how to live in service of others and his devotion to his wife, family, and those in need was boundless,” she said. “I am also so grateful that my daughters had a chance to be in his presence. #kindness #service #love.”

Jimmy’s son Chip Carter released a statement via The Carter Center after his father’s passing.
“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” he said. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”
During a segment on Morning Joe, Mika led a tribute to Jimmy. In the report, she called him an “outsider who rose from the southern soil to the ultimate seat of power.”
Additionally, she wrote a piece for MSNBC detailing how she first met Jimmy during her childhood.
“I first met President Carter as a child. My dad, Zbigniew Brzezinski, served as his national security adviser from 1977 to 1981 — from age 10 through my early teen years,” she wrote in the December 29 post. “They were also friends. My dad was his trusted confidant and jogging partner. I feel so lucky that I got to know the Carter family.”
“President Carter was a good man, one who was underestimated, faithful, humble and a public servant to his core,” Mika added.
At the end of the post, she wrote, “I will miss Jimmy Carter, the president, the person, the shining example of public service and personal morality,” adding, “Jimmy Carter was a great man over his 100 years. More importantly, he was a good man. And he will be missed.”
