MJ Coyle’s Biggest Bombshells About ‘Good Bones’: From Drama on Set to Difficult Projects

On Not Keeping in Touch With His Costars

Things seemed pretty status quo in front of the cameras during the show’s final season, but that wasn’t always the case behind the scenes. MJ has not kept in contact with his Good Bones costars aside from Mina.

“I haven’t talked to Cory [Miller] in a long time,” MJ said during an episode of Mina’s podcast in October 2023. “I haven’t talked to Tad [Starsiak]. I’ve talked to your mom just like briefly when everything kind of ended, but no, I think everyone just kind of needs space, and a little bit of time, and healing.”

On the Vibes on Set

Mina previously revealed that she had a “knockdown drag-out [fight] during demo” with her mom, Karen, during season 8. That wasn’t the only thing causing tension on set.

“It got to the point that our small team, at that point, we weren’t like even enjoying each other’s company,” MJ shared. “We got through COVID, we got through all of these things, we got through all of these seasons and everyone was just very burnt out. Everyone was sore. Everyone was miserable.”

On His Biggest Fight With Mina Starsiak Hawk

Mina and MJ also had their fair share of tiffs while working on projects on Good Bones.

“Probably one of our biggest fights ever was literally my first week of employment,” the artist explained. “We both put our feet down and weren’t moving at all, which is typically what happens with you and I.”

After their big fight, Mina and MJ walked away learning some valuable lessons about each other.

“In that moment, I think [what] you and I learned the most about each other is that we’re both super stubborn and we’re both right at all times,” he explained during the podcast with Mina. “Production [and] other people will definitely always be in our ears, either getting us to fight each other or getting us to come to an agreement that they secretly want.”

On His First Day on the Job

MJ was brought on as the Good Bones designer at the end of season 3 and the beginning of season 4. His first day on the job was definitely not what he expected.

“In typical Mina fashion, on my first day, Karen got there first because Karen was still part of the company, so I was getting a complete, total earful,” he recalled. “Then you walked in with a paper towel in your hand full of hard-boiled eggs, and I was like, ‘This woman is completely unhinged. Who brings hard-boiled eggs anywhere? What is happening? And now she is going to peel and eat them right in front of me on my first day.’”

On ‘Good Bones’ Ending

When it was announced that Good Bones would be ending after season 8, fans were completely shocked. When asked if he was upset by Mina’s decision to end the show, MJ did not hold back from giving an honest answer.

“Absolutely not,” he responded to Mina’s question. “There is no part of my being at all that didn’t see, recognize and meet you exactly at that decision.”
