Obviously you’re just putting the holidays behind you and getting ready to enter the new decade of the 2020s — how is that even possible? — but Hollywood is wasting no time pulling out all the stops to ensure that you keep coming to theaters to experience a wide variety of movies on the big screen. And what they’ve got in store for us — as you’ll see from the guide that follows — is pretty impressive, offering up a combination of new characters and stories and old favorites.

Looking to have the bejeezus scared out of you? Maybe you want to check out the remake of The Grudge, Kristen Stewart’s deep sea horror film Underwater, the all-new sequel to A Quiet Place or new takes on Halloween and Candyman, among others. Want to revisit old friends? Check out Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in the newest chapter of Bad Boys, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey, Mulan (who goes from animated heroine to live action), James Bond’s 25th big screen adventure, the action-packed “family” of Fast & Furious, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick and the return of the original Ghostbusters.

Maybe you’re a superhero fan and wondering what’s on the horizon since Marvel’s epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga in Avengers: Endgame. Well, there’s the Black Widow prequel starring Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie in the opening chapter of Marvel’s “Phase IV,” The Eternals; Gal Gadot back as Wonder Woman and Vin Diesel as Bloodshot, based on the Valiant comic book of the same name.

If you’re a devotee of Broadway, get ready for film versions of In the Heights and West Side Story (the latter directed by Steven Spielberg). And let’s not forget the wonders of CG animation that will bring us a lot of fun in 2020, including Sonic the Hedgehog coming into our world, Pixar’s Onward, the further adventures of Peter Rabbit, the Trolls, Minions and Gru; a new take on Scooby-Doo and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

‘The Grudge’ (January 3)

The cursed house and vengeful ghost is back in a reboot of the 2004 original rather than another sequel. Hopefully they can maintain the creep factor.

‘Underwater’ (January 10)

Based on the trailer, it looks like Alien set underwater. A group of deep sea researchers reach the bottom of the ocean and, following a massive earthquake, discover that they’re not alone (and we’re not talking about the fish). Kristen Stewart leads the cast.

‘Like a Boss’ (January 10)

Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne play a pair of friends who start a beauty company, but find that they’re being ripped off by their benefactor (Salma Hayek). They decide to fight back — with comic results.

‘Dolittle’ (January 17)

Like Rex Harrison and Eddie Murphy before him, Robert Downey, Jr. portrays the man who can talk with the animals. The trailer looks like a lot of fun.

‘Bad Boys for Life’ (January 17)

Third chapter in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence action-comedy series that sees them as cops getting involved in larger-than-life crimes. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer return as, respectively, director and producer.

Sebastian Stan plays Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman whose investigation into why a Vietnam War hero has not posthumously been awarded a Medal of Honor leads to a vast conspiracy.

Haunted house film about a woman (Mackenzie Davis) hired to take care of two orphans who are disturbed in a number of different ways.

‘The Gentlemen’ (January 24)

Chaos — both comical and serious — ensues when a British drug lord attempts to sell his company to a group of Oklahoma billionaires. Matthew McConaughey stars. Directed by Guy Ritchie.

‘The Rhythm Section’ (January 31)

Blake Lively is Stephanie Patrick, a woman seeking vengeance against those who manipulated a plane crash that killed her family. From the producers of the James Bond films.

‘Gretel and Hansel’ (January 31)

The “Hansel and Gretel” fable is pretty dark to begin with, but this take is promising to be even more twisted as a girl leads her younger brother into a dark forest in search of work and food, but instead they discover incredible evil.

‘Birds of Prey’ (February 7)

Given the subtitle And the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn, this one obviously sees Margot Robbie reprising that Suicide Squad role. After breaking up with the Joker, Harley sets off along with superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to retrieve a young girl kidnapped by a crime lord. Definitely R-rated.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ (February 14)

The famous speedster video game character comes to life and into our world in a live action/CG hybrid where he most stop his most evil enemy, Dr. Robotnic (Jim Carrey).

‘Fantasy Island’ (February 14)

The classic ’70s drama — about people coming to an island where their deepest fantasies come true — makes the leap to the big screen. Cast includes Michel Pena, Maggie Q, Lucy Hale and Michael Rooker.

Says Paramount Pictures, “Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.”

Mulan (March 27)

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Army to defend the country from Hunts, Hus Hulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Disguised as a man by the name of Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her innermost strength and embrace her true potential. The latest in Disney’s animated to live action films.

‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ (April 3)

When Thomas McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) and Bea (Rose Byrne) leave on their honeymoon, Peter Rabbit (voiced by James Corden) sets off on an adventure that brings him into contact with another rabbit who turns out to be an old friend of Peter’s father.

‘No Time to Die’ (April 8)

The 25th James Bond adventure sees Mr. Bond (Daniel Craig for the fifth and final time) coming out of retirement at the behest of CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) to investigate Safin (Rami Malek), a criminal who has developed a deadly new technology.

‘Trolls World Tour’ (April 17)

The Trolls are back and apparently they’re on a world tour of some sort. Your guess is as good as ours.

‘Bad Trip’ (April 24)

Tiffany Hadish and Michaela Contin play friends who decide to take a cross-country trip pulling pranks on people and capturing the results via hidden camera.

‘Monster Problems’ (April 17)

An apocalyptic vision with a sense of humor as Dylan O’Brien plays Joel Dawson, a man who has to fight monsters en route to reuniting with the girl he loves. Kind of sounds like the Netflix series Daybreak (which is so worth checking out).

‘Black Widow’ (May 1)

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow may have (here comes a big spoiler) died during the course of Avengers: Endgame, but that doesn’t mean the character should stop having fun. A prequel set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff is forced to confront her past (with lots of ass-kicking along the way).

‘Greyhound’ (May 8)

Tom Hanks plays a Merchant Marine skipper who attempts to keep his ship in part of a military convoy that’s being stalked by a Nazi U-boat during World War II.

‘Scoob!’ (May 15)

Ruh-roh! Scooby-Doo and the gang of Mystery, Inc. return to the big screen, but this time in a CG film. This time they’re on a mission to stop the ghost dog of Cerberus from being unleashed on the world. Also, they discover that Scooby has a much greater destiny than anyone anticipated.

‘The Woman in the Window’ (May 15)

An agoraphobic woman living alone in New York begins spying on her new neighbors, only to witness a disturbing act of violence. Sounds like a modern take on Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. The cast includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Amy Adams, Gary Oldman and Julianne Moore.

‘Fast & Furious 9’ (May 22)

The plot of this one hasn’t been released yet, but it’s the latest installment of the action-adventure franchise that is expected to reunite Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Charlize Theron and Michael Rooker.

‘The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run’ (May 22)

More fun under the sea in this animated adventure with SpongeBob and friends (and enemies).

‘Artemis Fowl’ (May 29)

Based on the book series by Eoin Coifer, this film begins the adventures of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw), who comes from a long line of criminal mastermind and is in search of his recently-vanished father.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (June 5)

Set, as the title suggests, in 1984, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is somehow reunited with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who we saw killed during World War I in the previous film. At the same time, she has to go up against criminal mastermind Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).

‘Candyman’ (June 12)

This one is being called a “spiritual sequel” to the original Candyman which was released in 1992. Tony Todd is back as Stix and the setting of this horror film is back in the Chicago neighborhood where the story began in the first place.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (June 26)

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete Mitchell (the returning Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him.

‘In the Heights’ (June 26)

The Broadway musical, about a bodega owner torn between closing his store and returning to the Dominican Republic, makes the leap to the big screen. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the original play, stars.

When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are expected to return from the original.

Oh it’s that time — the fifth time, actually — again where for one 12-hour period no crime is punishable and society runs amok.

Anyone who saw the extended trailer for this one on IMAX presentations of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, could easily have thought it was a crime drama. Turns out it’s actually about a time-traveling secret agent trying to avoid World War III. Who knew? Directed by Christopher Nolan.

‘Jungle Cruise’ (July 24)

Riverboat captain Frank (Dwayne Johnson) brings scientist Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her younger brother (Jack Whitehall) on a mission to find the Tree of Life, which is believed to have healing powers. During this 1920s-set adventure, they must cope with dangerous animals and a competing expedition.

‘Morbius’ (July 31)

Jared Leto is Michael Morbius, whose attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease actually transforms him into a vampire-like being. The character, like Venom before him, comes from the pages of Spider-Man comics.

Mark Wahlberg is Evan Michaels, a man who has been experiencing a wide variety of visions, which, it turns out, are actually from his past lives.

‘The One and Only Ivan’ (August 14)

Teaming up with an elephant named Stella, the gorilla Ivan tries to discover the secrets of his past while they attempt to make a break from captivity. Sam Rockwell is the voice of Ivan with Angelina Jolie as the voice as Stella.

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ (August 21)

As they’ve settled into middle-age, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are called back to a life of adventure when they’re visited by someone from the future who informs them they have to create a song that will save the entire universe. Whoa!

A retired sheriff and his wife (played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, who last worked together as Superman’s foster parents in 2013’s Man of Steel) fight to rescue their grandson from a dangerous off-grid family upon the death of their son.

‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ (August 28)

Taking place three years after the original, Ryan Reynolds’ bodyguard character Michael Bryce teams up again with Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman character of Darius Kincaid to help save Darius’ wife, Sonia (Salma Hayek).

When a United Nations military team inadvertently finds itself entering a portal to an alternate world, they have to use all of their resources to prevent creatures from using that portal to invade and destroy Earth.

One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

Another one of those films that we know virtually nothing about, except (and it’s a biggie) that this is a big screen prequel to HBO’s The Sopranos. That’s good enough for us!

‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ (September 25)

Writer/director Aaron Sorkin brings to life the story of the Chicago Seven, protestors charged by the federal government with inciting riots (among other things) at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

‘Venom 2’ (October 2)

The critics weren’t too fond of it, but the audience turned the original into a huge hit. Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock, who is now sharing his body with the symbiote Venom to become an anti-hero. The character actually began as a villain in the pages of Spider-Man, though so far there’s been no sign of Spidey in these films.

‘BIOS’ (October 2)

Tom Hanks plays Finch, a dying inventor and one of the last humans left alive on Earth. He decides to build an android to keep himself and his dog company as they embark on a cross-country journey.

‘Death on the Nile’ (October 9)

While on holiday in Egypt, Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh, reprising the role from Murder on the Orient Express) must find a killer. The cast includes Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer.

‘The Witches’ (October 9)

Back to the Future co-creator Robert Zemeckis directs this second adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel. The focus is on a young boy who comes across a conference of witches while staying with his grandmother at a hotel. As punishment for his intrusion, he’s turned into a mouse by the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway). Also starring Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock.

‘Respect’ (October 9)

A biographical drmaa of the late singer Aretha Franklin, with Jennifer Hudson in the lead role. Also starring Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and Mary J. Blige.

‘Halloween Kills’ (October 16)

Last year they resurrected the Halloween franchise by bringing Jamie Lee Curtis back and forgetting all about the many sequels the original film inspired. Well, now we’re getting a sequel to that film, with Jamie returning as Laurie Strode and Nick Castle as serial killer Michael Myers.

‘Snake Eyes’ (October 18)

Third film in the G.I. Joe franchise (which in itself is based on the long-running toy line). This one is a prequel to what’s come before, revealing the origin of the character Snake Eyes (played by Henry Golding).

‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ (October 23)

When a teenager witnesses a murder, he finds himself being chased by twin assassins across the Montana wilderness, which is in the midst of a massive wildfire. Angelina Jolie plays a survival expert who have protect him from these various threats.

‘The Eternals’ (November 6)

A new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins with this adventure of the Eternals, an immortal race of aliens created by the Celestials, who are sworn to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Angelina Jolie stars.

‘Stillwater’ (November 6)

Matt Damon is Bill Baker, a man who has to try and get his daughter (Abigail Breslin) freed from murder charges she’s innocent of, despite the fact that the two of them are very much estranged.

‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ (November 13)

The popular children’s favorite of books, the animated PBS series and, of course, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, is brought to CG life in this whimsical adventure. Darby Camp is Emily Elizabeth, with Jack Whitehall as Uncle Casey and Izaac Wang as Owen Yu.

‘Deep Water’ (November 13)

This one has an intriguing premise: A married couple who have fallen out of love with each other begin playing deadly mind games against one another that begins seeing those around them dying. Starring are Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas.

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ (November 20)

We’re honestly not sure what to expect from this one, but it should be pretty cool, taking the Big G, most recently from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the big ape from Kong: Skull Island and bringing them together in battle. We’re pretty sure this is going to be a step up from the ’60s King Kong vs. Godzilla.

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ (November 25)

In a mysterious realm called Kumandra, a warrior named Raya searches for the last dragon in the world. Definitely a situation where the title says it all. Coming From Disney.

‘Escape Room 2’ (November 30)

Undoubtedly more of what we saw the first time out: a group of people enter an escape room and those who aren’t killed in horrible ways get out. Pretty simple formula, but effective.

‘Samaritan’ (December 11)

IMDB describes this one as follows: “A young boy learns that a superhero who was thought to have gone missing after an epic battle twenty years ago may in fact still be around.” The film stars Sylvester Stallone, though it’s not clear if he’s going to show up in colorful spandex or not.

‘Dune’ (December 18)

The epic sci-fi novel is brought to the screen for the first time since David Lynch’s attempt in the 1980s. It’s about the son of a noble family who is tasked with protecting the most valuable element in the galaxy. Directed by Blade Runner 2049‘s Denis Villeneuve.

‘West Side Story’ (December 18)

Teenagers Tony and Maria (Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler), despite having affiliations with rival street gangs, the white Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks, fall in love in 1950s New York City. It will be interesting to see how this story, staged on Broadway a number of times and subject of a 1961 film directed by Robert Wise, will appeal to modern audiences. Directed by Steven Spielberg.

‘Coming 2 America’ (December 18)

Eddie Murphy is on a roll these days, so it’s not surprising he’d return to one of his most popular roles. Set after the events of the first film, former Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie) is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Honoring his royal father’s (James Earl Jones) dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) set off to America once again.

‘Tom and Jerry’ (December 23)

The famous battling cat and mouse brought to CG life in what is billed as a live-action film. Neither are expected to speak, which is the case in the vast majority of their previous appearances.

‘The Croods 2’ (December 23)

In this CG adventure, the Croods, led by Guy (Ryan Reynolds’ voice), have to prove how good they really are when they’re challenged by another family claiming to be better and more evolved than them in every way.

‘The Tomorrow War’ (December 25)

Cool concept: humanity is losing a battle with an alien invasion, but to help shore up our side, scientists develop a means of drafting soldiers from the past to fight the war of the future. Chris Pratt and Yvonne Strahovski star.

‘News of the World’ (December 25)

Never one not to challenge himself, Tom Hanks plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who, following America’s Civil War, accepts the task of bringing an orphaned girl to her relatives. This one sees Tom teaming up again with his Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass.
