Nia Vardalos on Adopting Her Daughter: “I’m So Grateful and Can’t Imagine Life Without Her”

Becoming a mom was far from easy for Nia Vardalos.

After 13 failed IVF treatments, several miscarriages and unsuccessful surrogate attempts, the 53-year-old My Big Fat Greek Wedding star and her husband, actor Ian Gomez, happily adopted their daughter, Ilaria in 2008 — and life has been pretty sweet ever since.

“It was a sad process for me to become a mom and a long process,” Nia revealed in a candid new interview with People. “I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t have a biological child.”

After more than nine years of trying to start a family, Nia and Ian, 51, received a call that they’d been matched with a three-year-old little girl. “I am so grateful and can’t imagine my life without her,” Nia said of adopting Ilaria.
