The day before the 1996 Oscars, Sharon’s custom Vera Wang dress fell out of a FedEx truck and was run over! “The dress had a black tire track down the whole front,” recalled the actress, who thought quickly and paired a simple Gap turtleneck with a Valentino skirt and Armani jacket. Two years later, she did it again by donning a button-down Gap shirt and a lavender skirt by Vera Wang.

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi says she was thinking of Lucille Ball when she designed her bold 1993 awards outfit. “Lucy would always come out in these great ensembles. And green is not a color I would normally wear,” said the star, who admitted that she felt hurt when she landed on worst-dressed lists.

Kim Basinger

“I don’t live by a lot of society’s rules; I can’t pattern myself after the herd,” said Kim, who decided to go her own way at the Academy Awards in 1990 with a gown she designed herself. The critics hated it, but she got an A+ for creativity!

The Oscars were broadcast in color for the first time in 1966, and Julie, star of Darling, made the most of it in a gold lamé jumpsuit. “My friend Alfie made me an outfit from a pattern that we chose together,” said the first Best Actress winner to accept her award wearing pants.

“Most people are afraid to step out, to take a chance beyond their established identity,” said Demi, who did just that by styling herself in a bustier, metallic fabric skirt and bicycle shorts trimmed in lace for the 1989 Oscars.

In 1983, the Sophie’s Choice star won her first Academy Award for Best Actress while five months pregnant with her eldest daughter, Mamie Gummer. “She had to find a dress off the sale rack at Saks and wear it backwards, so it fit her,” says Karger.

“As you can see, I got my handbook on how to dress like a serious actress,” said Cher. Upset that the academy had snubbed her performance in Mask, she took revenge by wearing this Bob Mackie design to the 1986 Awards.

“Even when I was young, I was way into fashion,” said Diane Keaton, who wore clothes from her own closet when she filmed Annie Hall and when she won the Best Actress Oscar for the role in 1978. Instead of diamond jewelry, she accented her Giorgio Armani double-breasted jacket with a boutonniere and one of her favorite scarves.

Unhappy with her studio in 1936, Bette chose a frumpy navy-andwhite ensemble that had been created by costumer Orry- Kelly for her role in Housewife. The diva, who won Best Actress honors for Dangerous, was sending a message to her bosses that she felt like the hired help!
