Celebrity Hairstylist Dishes Oscars Hair Trends That Will Take Years Off Your Face (Exclusive)

The Oscars may be a night to celebrate performances from the year past, but it’s also a night that decides the style trends for the year to come. With red carpet coverage spanning more than five hours, the day is as much about gorgeous gowns and perfectly coiffed hair as it is Best Picture.

So what did we learn from celeb style trendsetters like Julia Roberts and Linda Cardellini? “The Oscars was all about warm tones,” said the celebrity hairstylist Linet K.

Kelly Ripa

Even platinum queen Kelly Ripa traded in her icy locks for a warmer based blonde or what Linet calls “Bronde,” not quite blonde and not quite brunette, “It’s the best of both worlds and provides warmer youthful tones for dimension.”

Platinum has long ruled the red carpet since the days of Marilyn Monroe, actresses have seemingly associated success with cool peroxide blonde. So why warm? “Warmer is complimentary on every skin tone. It makes you look younger!” Linet K. also recommends warmer tones to save time. “Warmer tones add vibrancy to your face, you won’t need to wear as much makeup. But icy hair will wash you out. You will have to add a lot of makeup to create dimension.”

Charlize Theron

A-listers like Charlize Theron, Emma Stone and Emilia Clarke traded in their signature blonde or red locks for warm chocolatey brown shades. Want to try a warmer color without losing dimension? The technique is easy, inexpensive and bleach free! Dubbed “choclayage” by Linet K.: “Ask your stylist for a warmer tone, gloss or glaze over your solid color or your existing balayage. The results will be sunny and very pretty.”

There were even rumors flying around the red carpet that Emilia colored her signature tresses herself from drug store box dye right before the show! Though disproven, Linet K. still warns against this cheap alternative to salon color, and has this recommendation …

… “The problem with box dye is that the ends of hair are always lightest, and will grab most of the color, becoming darker than the rest of the head. Box dye almost always leaves a red tone in the hair, and if you’re going from blonde to brunette your hair could be too porous, sucking up too much color. Though you’re trying for brown you will end up with black.”

Considering going darker like these ladies but you’re not sure you’ll love it? Here’s a pro tip from Linet K. “Try a gloss just in case you want to go back to blonde. In 6-10 weeks the gloss will be completely gone. I avoid permanent color on my blondes that want to go darker, because I know they’re going to come back at some point sand want to go back to blonde.”

As for Spring styles: “The carpet was full of practical hairstyles. Blunt chopped bobs and soft waves.” Like Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King. “This style is great because it’s easy to maintain,” says Linet K.
