Peter Alexander ‘Wins’ Halloween on ‘Today’ With Mrs.Doubtfire Costume: ‘Robin Williams Would Approve’
The Today crew usually pulls out all of the stops for their Halloween celebration each year, including their iconic costumes. This year was no different, as Peter Alexander earned the love of viewers with his Mrs. Doubtfire costume, on the Thursday, October 31, episode.
The Weekend Today anchor dressed as the character from the 1993 Robin Williams film complete with a skirt, cardigan, gray wig, glasses, earrings and makeup. The resemblance was uncanny! And he pulled off the look with a smile on his face throughout the episode.
Viewers could not stop talking about Peter’s costume on social media. On the many Halloween-related posts on Today’s official Instagram page, there were so many comments from people who loved his out-of-the-box look.
A montage was posted of Peter dancing around backstage and putting on the accent that Williams’ character had in the movie, which earned the Academy Award for Best Makeup. For his work on the film, Williams, who died in August 2014, also earned the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.
In one clip, Peter sported some padding on his backside and shook his behind in front of the camera.
“I think the late great Robin Williams would approve your costume,” one person wrote, while another person said, “Peter Alexander wins!”
Another person wrote, “You were my FAVORITE!!!!!! Nailed it!!!!” while another person penned, “Amazing! Loved how he really got into character too!”

As if he wasn’t already committed to the bit, Peter walked around the Today plaza with the vacuum, paying homage to the fictional housekeeper.
His costume was part of the theme “VHS Rewind” that the show went with for Halloween this year, with the cast dressing as movie characters from the ‘90s and 2000s. Other favorites from the group included Savannah Guthrie’s Elle Woods costume, complete with a stuffed chihuahua, and Al Roker’s Beetlejuice costume.
“I have watched the halloween edition for years and this by far was the BEST!!! You checked all the boxes. Thank you for bringing joy to our day each morning!” one fan wrote in a comment on Today’s Instagram page.
“Every year gets better & better! This year is the best yet!” another person said.
Last year, the Today cast paid tribute to their favorite “Kellyoke” moments from The Kelly Clarkson Show. Peter and Weekend Today cohost Laura Jarrett dressed as Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton from the 2023 duet “Happy Anywhere.” They did a lip-synch performance of the song on stage in front of the live crowd last year. It was truly epic!
And this year’s episode was no different, as the hosts took part in performances and engaged with the crowd. At one point, Legally Blonde’s Luke Wilson made a surprise appearance during the broadcast. It was the perfect sendoff for Hoda Kotb, who will be leaving Today in early 2025.
“I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on. And then I thought about, obviously I had my kiddos late in life,” she said in her departure announcement on September 26. “And I was thinking that they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have. I feel like we only have a finite amount of time.”
Hoda is a mom to daughters Haley and Hope, whom she shares with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman.
“They need a little more of me, and I need more of them,” she added while addressing her costars. “So with all of that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world, because I just, today I was looking at my phone, and all of you guys are holding my kids. And I was like, oh, my gosh! I kept looking at them, all the pictures.”
