Princess Charlotte’s Future Children Are Unlikely to Be Given Royal Titles

She’s a princess, but her children likely won’t be referred to as His or Her Royal Highness. In a new interview with Town & Country, royal expert Lucy Hume explains why Princess Charlotte’s future kids have a slim chance at being princes or princesses.

“Royal titles are inherited through sons, so if Princess Charlotte has children they would not automatically inherit the titles ‘HRH,’ ‘Prince,’ or ‘Princess,’” Lucy, the associate director of publishing and etiquette house Debrett’s, told the publication. For instance, Beatrice and Eugenie, the daughters of Prince Andrew, are princesses, while Zara and Peter Phillips, the children of Princess Anne, do not have royal titles. Still, the ruling monarch has the power to give titles to the children of royal daughters.

“The monarch may offer to bestow a royal title upon his or her daughter’s children,” said Lucy. “For Peter and Zara Phillips, [their grandmother Queen Elizabeth II] offered to give them a royal title when they were born, but Princess Anne and Captain Phillips opted to decline this offer.”

Though Princess Charlotte’s kids might not have a chance at sovereignty, the adorable two-year-old’s place in line to the throne will remain — even if her mother, Kate Middleton, who is pregnant and expecting her third child with husband Prince William, welcomes another boy. In 2013, before the birth of Prince George, now 4, a law changed so that male members of the royal family no longer hold precedence over females.

Kate, 35, reminded us that another little royal is on their way when she debuted her itty-bitty baby bump during a Buckingham Palace event to commemorate World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Though she previously suffered from a severe form of morning sickness, it seems as though the third-time mom-to-be is finally feeling better.

The event marked her first public appearance since announcing her pregnancy in early September. “The Duchess’ condition is improving but she is still suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. She is delighted to be able to be here tonight,” a palace aide told reporters at the event, according to People.
