Rita Wilson Admits She Thought About Her ‘Own Mortality’ After Breast Cancer Diagnosis 4 Years Ago

After Rita Wilson learned that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, her life was anything but easy. The 62-year-old actress recently recalled what it was like to hear she had a potentially fatal disease when she took to Twitter on Tuesday, March 26, to share a photo of her and her husband, Tom Hanks, at a party.

“Four years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had so many different thoughts,” she said. “You’re scared, anxious, you think about your own mortality. So I had a serious discussion with my husband that if anything happens, I wanted him to be super sad for a very long time.”

Rita revealed that she had breast cancer in a statement that was published by People in April 2015. “Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma,” she said. “I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”

“I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction. I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health,” she continued.

Thankfully, Rita is now 100 percent cancer-free and she previously told Closer Weekly that her health scare made her appreciate life a lot more. “I’m so glad to be alive, and then I try to live my life remembering that every single moment of the day,” she gushed. “I literally wake up every morning and say, thank you, God. What a gorgeous day!”
