Rob Lowe Reveals ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Costar Demi Moore Helped Him Get Sober in the Late ’80s

It seems like Demi Moore isn’t the only one who’s happy they opened up about their journey to sobriety. While stopping by The View on Monday, September 30, Rob Lowe got honest about his St. Elmo’s Fire costar’s new memoir, Inside Out, and revealed Demi helped him get sober in the late 1980s.

“She was the first person I ever knew who got sober,” the Parks and Recreation actor, 55, admitted to the talk show hosts. “She was a huge inspiration to me. It was the ’80s, we were all doing our thing. I just remember thinking, ‘If that girl can get sober, anybody can.’”

The Outsiders actor, who also starred alongside the Ghost actress, 56, in the 1986 film About Last Night, reflected on getting sober over 29 years ago. “Everybody has that person in their life where they go, ‘That’s a great example,’” he gushed of Demi. “So it was very helpful.”

Looking back on his journey to sobriety, Rob also revealed he “loved rehab” because it gave him “answers that I didn’t have” about life. “It was like going to school to learn how to live your life with tools that nobody ever taught me,” he explained. “Here’s one of the great ones I learned: Never compare your insides to someone else’s outsides.’”

The West Wing star — who is the dad of sons Matthew, 26, and John, 24, with longtime wife Sheryl Berkoff — candidly continued, “I spend a lot of time thinking, ‘Should I be doing this, should I be doing that?’ It changed my life. I have great empathy in people who can just do it themselves,” Rob said. “I needed experts. It was great, it was fantastic.”

Since getting sober, Rob has been focusing on staying healthy and fit, while being the most incredible husband and dad to his wife and two kids. In fact, a source told Closer Weekly in July 2017 that fatherhood completely changed the Hollywood heartthrob.

Family means absolutely everything to Rob,” a friend of the actor previously revealed about him in an exclusive interview. “It’s what’s kept him grounded and sober now for nearly 26 years. It helped Rob organize the priorities in his life.”

We are so happy Rob is living the best life!
