Ryan Reynolds and Others Pay Tribute to John Candy on the 25th Anniversary of the Actor’s Death

Today marks the 25th anniversary of John Candy‘s death. The hilarious actor died at the age of 43 on this day, March 4, in 1994 as the result of a heart attack. To honor him, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds — a fellow Canadian — took to Twitter to pay homage to the man who impacted his career.

“It’s the 25th anniversary of John Candy’s passing,” Reynolds, 42, tweeted along with a video compilation of some of the late comedian’s memorable roles. “We cooked up a small tribute to a comedic genius and Canadian hero. If you haven’t seen much of his work, take a look at his films. He was a treasure.”

The video hits on some of John’s iconic projects like Cool Runnings, Home Alone, Spaceballs and, of course, Planes, Trains & Automobiles to name a few. It features the 1985 song “Everytime You Go Away” by Paul Young and was created with the help of John’s two children — 39-year-old Jennifer Candy and 34-year-old Christopher Candy — who also shared the clip on social media.

“Thanks Ryan and your crew. This is lovely,” Christopher wrote when retweeting the video. Jennifer replied and added, “Like I said before, @VancityReynolds @ChrisCandy4u, This made me cry. It’s so amazing and sweet! Thank you — 25 years tomorrow. Wow, he has so many people that absolutely love him, he was one of the best.”

Other celebs — including Guillermo del Toro, Ben Stiller, Josh Gad and even Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — also took to the internet to remember the Second City alum for the impact he had in the entertainment industry through his lively performances as well as to give Ryan props for sharing a touching tribute.

You may be gone but you’re clearly not forgotten, John.
