Savannah Guthrie Returns to ‘Today’ 1 Day After Craig Melvin Said She ‘Decided to Bail’
Savannah Guthrie made her return to Today after missing an episode of the show during Craig Melvin’s first week as her official coanchor.
Savannah, 53, was absent from the talk show on Thursday, January 16. At the time of her absence, Laura Jarrett, filled in for her at the news desk.
“Welcome to Today, so glad you’re with us on this busy Thursday morning,” Craig, 45, said at the start of Thursday’s episode. “Laura Jarrett is in, Savannah’s a little under the weather.”
“I know what you’re thinking, that after three days of Craig she decided to bail,” he joked.
“I wasn’t going to say it … But it’s nice to be with you,” Laura, responded.
But some viewers were shocked to see Savannah back so soon on Friday, January 17.
“Glad you’re back,” Craig told Savannah. “Feeling better?”
“The norovirus, I mean, it blazed through the house,” Savannah said. “But it was a quick mover. We’re all better.”

The Mostly What God Does author shared a photo in her Instagram Stories on Thursday of a notification from her Oura Ring app. It said, “Your biometrics show major signs of something straining your body.”
Savannah said that she got sick after appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, January 15, with Craig, and “then succumbed to the norovirus blazing through my house.”
Luckily, Savannah was feeling better to celebrate the Friday episode of Craig’s inaugural week as Today coanchor. The episode went on as planned.
The cohosts also appeared in a joint interview for Parade where they gushed about working alongside each other after Hoda Kotb’s emotional departure from the series.
“We’ve become legit friends. We’ve got kids that have hung out together, and we’ve hung out together, so we don’t have to fake it,” Craig told the outlet in the interview. The Pops author shares kids Delano and Sybil with wife Lindsay Czarniak.
“The audience can tell when the chemistry is manufactured, and we haven’t had to manufacture anything, which makes it even easier. I’m really excited to be on this adventure with my sister,” Craig continued.
Savannah is also a mom of two. She shares kids Vale and Charley with her husband, Mike Feldman.
“We talk probably more about that stuff than we do about work,” the Australia-born TV personality said. “We talk about our kids. We show each other pictures. He just got a puppy last year. We just got a puppy a month ago. We talk about the joys and pratfalls of puppy ownership.”
The two shared a memorable moment during their appearance on The Tonight Show, with Savannah saying she threw out Hoda’s stuff that she left behind after leaving Today.
“It’s a new era, it’s the Craig era, and we go and we sit on the set and there are these trays,” Savannah said during the late-night TV appearance. “It might have a mint or whatever it is. We realized that all of the trays, they were all Hoda’s stuff and it was, like, one contact and expired bean dip and belly button lint and all this stuff.”
Savannah sent Hoda a video of her throwing out her old stuff.
“Oh, hey girl. Guess you didn’t want any of this s–t,” she said in the clip while dumping the stuff. “Don’t mind me. Love you.”
