Jennifer Lopez’s Drama ‘Shades of Blue’ Is Ending After Season 3, NBC Announces
Fans of Jennifer Lopez might be feeling some Shades of Blue today — NBC just announced the police drama will end after its forthcoming third season. But the good news is that J.Lo will still continue working with the Peacock Network in other capacities!
Shades of Blue debuted in 2016, with the singer starring as Detective Harlee Santos, a single mother and an officer with an NYPD Street Crimes squad led by the corrupt Lieutenant Matt Wozniak (Goodfellas star Ray Liotta), who once helped her frame her abusive ex for murder. Jennifer, who also serves as an executive producer on the drama, delivered “perhaps the best dramatic work she’s done since her first-rate film Out of Sight,” according to Yahoo!‘s Ken Tucker. And she even won a People’s Choice Award for the role.
And it was a singularly fulfilling job for the 48-year-old, as she said in a statement: “I have enjoyed producing and starring in this beautifully complicated world and playing such an empowering yet flawed character — a woman, a detective, but, first and foremost, a mother. Now looking at it with a little distance, playing Harlee strengthened me and helped me grow into a more self-assured woman. It’s crazy how some parts permeate your soul and change you forever, and for that I am grateful. We crafted a poetic three-season arc on how her journey ends, which is true redemption. The way only Harlee could have done it — the hard way, the road less traveled. I thank NBC and all the talented actors, writers, crew, and producers for going on this journey with us!”
Universal Television President Pearlena Igbokwe has promised that Season 3 — which is set to peremie on June 17 at 10 p.m. on NBC — will thrill fans. “This is one of our flagship shows, and we’re excited to share the final chapter with viewers, who will be on the edge of their seats discovering how Harlee’s story concludes,” she said in the statement.
Luckily, we’ll see Jenny from the Block on other NBC shows, since she has an overall deal with Universal Television. She’ll return as a judge on NBC’s reality competition World of Dance, for example, when Season 2 launches this June; she already popped up on NBC’s Will & Grace revival; and she’ll star in the network’s live musical Bye Bye Birdie next year. Clearly, NBC has nothing but “Amor, Amor, Amor” for this talented multi-hyphenate.
