‘Shrinking’ Creators Tease Whether or Not Cobie Smulders Will Return as Sofi in Season 3

There was a quick How I Met Your Mother reunion in season 2 of Shrinking, and fans are hoping to see more of Cobie Smulders’ character on the show in the future.

Cobie, 42, played Sofi in one episode of Shrinking season 2, when Jason Segel’s Jimmy purchased a car that she listed online. The pair previously co starred in How I Met Your Mother, which aired from 2005 to 2014.

In Shrinking, Sofi and Jimmy had obvious chemistry during their brief interaction, but Jimmy ultimately decided not to pursue anything further with her. But it seems like the door is still open for her to come back on the show in season 3.

Jason, 44, spoke out about working with Cobie again after years of friendship.

“Shooting with Cobie again was a dream. We did nine years of How I Met Your Mother and that was never part of the Marshall/Robin dynamic so it was this gap in our acting experience together,” he told Variety in an interview published on Tuesday, December 24. “I think the reason people are reacting to it, the reason it feels like, ‘oh, I would like to see them together again’ is this is a scene where two people are meeting for the first time, but you’re supposed to have some other sense of, ‘whoa, what’s going on there?’”

“I think what is going on there, which is so cool and how acting works, is that we knew each other for 10 years in our most formative years, through thick and thin and becoming who you are,” he added. “And then to be standing across from each other as full-grown adults saying, ‘look at us still here, still standing.’ These are two characters having been through some tough times and Cobie and I have each separately been through some tough s–t side by side.”

When asked if he would like to see her return to Shrinking for season 3, Jason said, “I’m not trying to give any spoilers. But I think it’s all a reflection of if Jimmy can get his s–t together.”

Bill Lawrence, cocreator, writer and director of Shrinking, also said that he would love to bring Cobie back as Sofi in season 3.

“I would kill to have Cobie back in the show. We always do Easter eggs for what the next season’s about in the season before,’ he told TVLine on Tuesday, December 24. “And so, Cobie’s character is kind of a personification, a visual representation of what moving forward looks like for Jason’s character. If I can’t get lucky enough to have her back, we’re gonna have to go back to the drawing board.”

“I was a How I Met Your Mother fan and I did not even think about it when I was watching the scene, which is a good thing because a bad version of that could be like, ‘Oh, this is kind of cool. It’s just two old friends from a beloved show doing a scene together,’ but it felt authentic and was so romantic,” he added. “I thought they were both so good in it that I’m gonna do everything I can to coerce her into coming back to the show.”
