Most actors and actresses dream of winning an Oscar to proudly display in their home. For some lucky stars, it becomes a reality when they receive one of the coveted awards honoring a spectacular film performance but, for others, it sadly never happens. From modern celebs like Johnny Depp and Glenn Close to classic Hollywood icons including Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant, we’ve rounded up a list of eight actors who’ve been nominated for Academy Awards but have never won!

Johnny Depp

The actor has been nominated for three Oscars, all in the Best Actor category. His was first nominated in 2004 for his memorable portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and later got two more nods — for 2005’s Finding Neverland and 2008’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street — but has yet to win.

George Lucas

Can you believe the man behind Star Wars has never won an Oscar?! George has been nominated for four Academy Awards — twice for Best Director and twice for Best Screenplay — but has never won. He did, however, receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the 1991 Governors Awards, which is periodically handed out to “creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production.”

Alfred Hitchcock

The master of suspense was nominated for a total of five Best Director Oscars during his lifetime, including one for the classic thriller Psycho, but was never able to claim the prize. Like George Lucas, he did eventually win the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1968.

Glenn Close

The legendary actress has been nominated an impressive seven times, the first five coming in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. Then, in 2011, she received another nod for her role in the 19th century-set drama Albert Nobbs but lost to Meryl Streep. This year, Glenn was honored with her latest nomination for The Wife and is favorited by most to win — fingers crossed!

Cary Grant

Hollywood heartthrob Cary was only nominated for two Oscars during his long career, a surprise considering he appeared in over 70 films. He was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1969 at the age of 65 for "his unique mastery of the art of screen acting."

Sigourney Weaver

Sigourney has been nominated for three acting Oscars and was even a double nominee one year! She received both a Leading Actress nod for her role in Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey and a Supporting Actress nod for Working Girl back in 1989 but has yet to take home an Academy Award.

Peter O’Toole

Peter, who died in December 2013 at age 81, was nominated for a total of eight Oscars during his career, with many hoping that his last nomination in 2007 would finally get him a statue. Though he never won in a competitive category, Peter was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2003, probably because the Academy felt bad for snubbing him so many times.

Annette Bening

Annette has received a total of four nominations, three in the Leading Actress category and one for Supporting Actress. Her last nod was in 2010 for her role as a lesbian OB/GYN in the comedy-drama The Kids Are All Right.
