Ted Danson and Wife Mary Steenburgen Celebrate ‘How Lucky’ They Are ‘All the Time’: ‘Joy’
Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen are gearing up to celebrate their milestone 30th wedding anniversary. The pair have made so many amazing memories together throughout the decades and their love has never fizzled out.
“We know how blessed we are. We wake up and we laugh together,” Ted, 76, gushed to People of their romance during an interview on Sunday, November 10. “It helps that we got a new dog recently, who’s very funny like us.”
The Fargo actor said that he realizes how fortunate he is after finding his perfect match in Hollywood.
“We celebrate how lucky we are all the time,” Ted told the outlet. “We make sure joy stays in our life, and gratitude. You know, when you get older, [it] hurts. There’s s–t that’s not fun. But stay in gratitude, stay creative, stay hopeful, and you can kind of hopefully coast over a lot of things in life.”
Ted, who stars in the upcoming Netflix series A Man on the Inside, is thrilled for his upcoming marriage milestone with Mary, 71.
“Once you meet her, you’ll understand,” he told Us Weekly on Sunday, November 10. “She’s magnificent and we love each other and we laugh a lot.”
The Cheers actor also revealed the secret to keeping his lasting marriage afloat with his longtime partner.
“We both get one ingredient in life, which is so important, that if something goes wrong, you look at yourself knowing and trusting the other person is looking at [themselves], which is what allows you to grow,” he explained. “If you’re with somebody who’s not willing to look at themselves, that doesn’t work.”

“I love who she is, truly,” he added. “If I could be a woman, I’d be her. She’s trained me well. I could do it. I swear I could do it.”
Ted and Mary wed in 1995. Prior to that, he was married to his first wife, Randy Danson, from 1970 to 1975, and to his second wife, Casey Coates, from 1977 to 1993. Mary was previously married to Malcolm McDowell from 1980 to 1990.
The Golden Globe winner explained that his marriage to Mary has been a “miracle.”
“Mary Steenburgen is, you know, literally heaven-sent,” he said during an episode of CBS Sunday Morning on Sunday, November 10. “I did some work on myself for about a year before I met her, after Cheers, becoming emotionally mature and real. And I worked hard at it. And then along came Mary Steenburgen. … We are so blessed. To love somebody and to be loved, is just one of those heaven-on-earth miracles, you know? And that came with Mary.”
And just like her husband, Mary is not shy about sharing their love for one another with the world.
“Everyone I’ve ever loved has taught me so much, but I feel like my life really began when I found him,” the Step Brothers actress told People in February 2021. “I think love is just really listening to your heart.”
A Man on the Inside is due out on Netflix on November 21.
