With a huge smile on his face, Toby Keith walked the red carpet at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday, September 28. The “Red Solo Cup” singer was joined by his longtime wife, Tricia Lucus, at the inaugural event.

The songwriter’s appearance at the ceremony came more than a year after he announced that he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

“I feel pretty good,” he said amid his health battle in an interview with E! News ahead of the show. “It’s a little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and down. It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero but I feel good today.”

A Class Act

In his moving speech, Toby, 62, thanked his fans and his loved ones for always supporting him.

“I want to thank my beautiful family that’s here,” he said on stage. “A lot of people go in and make a career like this of 30 years. Most of all, I want to thank the fans for still allowing us to do what we do. Have a wonderful evening, thank you!”

Return to the Stage

During the show, Toby took the stage to perform the song “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” His song choice had a very personal meaning for him.

“Well, mainly because I’ve been going through my cancer fight for the last couple of years and it’s really inspiring for a lot of people,” he told reporters on the red carpet. “And coming back on TV for the first time and performing live in front of a live audience, I thought it was fitting.”
