10. Peter and the Wolf

Greg (Barry Williams) and Peter (Christopher Knight) go on a double date with two older women. To look more mature, Peter dons a fake mustache — with predictably hilarious results. “Chris was like 14 at the time and had never been in a romantic situation in real life,” recalls Lloyd J. Schwartz, son of Brady creator Sherwood Schwartz. “He was terrified!”

9. Hawaii Bound

When the Bradys go on vacation in Hawaii, it’s all surf, sand and straw skirts — until they come across a tiki idol some of the locals say brings bad luck. “It became a big part of the episode,” Lloyd says of the idol, which he bought in a gift shop. “I thought that was kind of fun.”

8. Confessions, Confessions

After Peter breaks Carol’s (Florence Henderson) favorite vase and doesn’t admit guilt, his conscience gets the better of him. In a dream, he sees the ball hitting the vase over and over again. “It’s the thing people most remember about that episode,” Lloyd says. “It was my idea [to add that extra footage].”

7. Getting Greg’s Goat

Lloyd’s own school-days shenanigans inspired this episode, in which Greg steals his rival high school’s mascot the night before the big game. Dad Mike (Robert Reed) tries to help him return the critter before Greg gets caught. “I was a prankster when I was in college,” Lloyd admits.

6. The Subject Was Noses

Who can forget when Marcia (Maureen McCormick) got clobbered in the schnoz with an errant football before her big date with dreamy Doug Simpson? “Shakespeare has ‘To be, or not to be?’ ” says Lloyd. “For The Brady Bunch, it’s ‘Oh, my nose!’”

5. Father of the Year

Lloyd says this season 1 episode was a favorite of his dad’s. In it, Marcia secretly enters a Father of the Year essay- writing contest. To meet the deadline, she stays up late and skips her chores — for which she is punished. All is forgiven when Mike realizes what she’s really been up to. “The story,” says Lloyd, “had heart.”

4. The Slumber Caper

Marcia’s first sleepover almost doesn’t happen when she is accused of scrawling an unflattering picture of her teacher in class. “A lot of the episodes came from my dad’s life,” says Lloyd. “Like Marcia, he drew the picture, but somebody else wrote the teacher’s name underneath it.” And also like Marcia, his parents believed him!

3. The Honeymoon

Things go haywire at Carol and Mike’s backyard wedding when the boys’ dog, Tiger, and the girls’ cat, Fluffy, get loose. Feeling guilty about scolding their kids for the mishap, the newlyweds decide to bring everyone along on the honeymoon — including housekeeper Alice (Ann B. Davis)! The episode, which aired on September 26, 1969, is one “my dad really fought for,” says Lloyd. “It was probably his favorite.”

2. A Room at the Top

The two eldest Brady kids — Marcia and Greg — fight over who gets to convert the attic into his or her bedroom in this season 4 episode. “Of course it’s one of my favorites — I directed it,” says Lloyd, who was 26 at the time. “I just thought I would try it, and they let me do it.”

1. Bobby’s Hero

Bobby (Mike Lookinland) pretends to be his hero, Jesse James, and brings a cap gun to school. When Carol and Mike tell him about the real outlaw — not the cleaned-up version he saw on TV — Bobby has a nightmare that Jesse kills his entire family! “I like it because it makes a point, and it called for Mike to do some really good acting,” says Lloyd. “It was really very, very moving.”
