Kate Middleton Was Once a Commoner, but Was Princess Diana?

She was one of the most beautiful princesses to ever be in the royal family, but many fans are wondering one thing about Princess Diana. Before she married Prince Charles, was she a commoner?

Turns out, unlike her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, Diana was not a commoner prior to becoming a wife. On July 1, 1961, Diana was born into the Spencer family, who is a family of British nobility with royal ancestry and close ties to the British royal family. Many members of the Spencer family were made into made knights, baronets, and peers.

They lived in Park House in Norfolk and although she was born Diana Frances Spencer, in 1975 she earned the title Lady Diana Spencer after her father became Earl Spencer. Diana’s grandmothers both served as a lady-in-waiting: one to Queen Elizabeth and one to The Queen Mother. However, Diana’s godparents that baptized her were actually wealthy commoners.

On July 29, 1981, Diana wed Charles and officially became Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duchess of Rothesay, and Countess of Chester. Even though she wasn’t a commoner before, she officially became a royal at the nuptials.

Kate, however, was a commoner before marrying Diana’s son, Prince William. Before saying “I do” in April 2011, Catherine Elizabeth Middleton was just your ordinary girl born to an upper-middle-class family. Kate’s father Michael Middleton’s family had ties to British aristocracy, so the family benefited off trust funds and were very wealth even though they just had ordinary jobs.

When the 35-year-old tied the knot with William, she officially ditched the commoner title and became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Their two kids, Prince George and Prince Charles, are not commoners since they were born into the British royal family. However, commoners or not, Diana and Kate were and are two very fabulous women!
