Though Lauren thought “sailing was an acquired taste,” she’d indulge hubby Bogie — who’d weigh anchor every chance he could get, including this jaunt in the early 1950s. “I use it to get away from things,” he admitted. “Hemingway said that the sea was the last free place in the world, and I respect it and love it.”

Cary Grant

While on a European vacation in 1939, Cary found plenty of time to kick up his heels at Monte Carlo’s Hôtel de Paris. And that suited him just fine. “My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can.”

“I love to travel,” Liz once confessed. Yet she never really needed this ’56 visit to Malibu or any other trip to escape Hollywood. “I [often] get away in my head. I can dream.”

At Nevada’s Lake Mead in 1951, the actor got a chance to get in some fishing and share his passion for the open water with son Sean. “My mother’s people were seafaring folk,” recalled Errol. “[So growing up] my primary interest became the sea. And I relished the trips we would take [upon it].”

Taking a break from filming 1966’s After the Fox, Britt and then hubby Peter took in the Italian coast. “Back then, it was unspoiled, and I remember exploring and relaxing,” she said. “When I’m away, I like to explore, relax…and enjoy good food.”

During the filming of 1959’s Exodus in Israel, Paul got a chance to do some sightseeing with wife Joanne…as well as explore his Jewish roots. “I could have eliminated my Jewish roots. [But] I decided to be a Jew, because it is hard to be a Jew and I like challenges.”

Jane Wyman and Ronald Reagan

After getting married in 1940, the couple would enjoy a bike ride or picnic, which were most decidedly Ronnie’s idea. “[Before we dated,] my nights were spent at the Cocoanut Grove or the Trocadero [clubs],” Jane said. “Ronnie asked me why I didn’t do more daytime activities like horseback riding or playing golf.”

Brigitte Bardot

“I was crazy about St. Tropez,” gushed Brigitte, who spent the ’60s soaking in the sun as well as the “poetry” and “incredible charm” of this hamlet in the south of France. She loved it so much, she made it the ultimate getaway — retiring there in 1973.
