Why Is Sam Champion Moving? ‘GMA’ Host Reveals Reason He’s Leaving His NYC Apartment and Garden
Good Morning America’s Sam Champion revealed that he is moving out of his longtime New York City apartment. He explained his reasoning for the big move in an April 2025 Instagram post.
Why Is Sam Champion Moving?
Sam, who lived in the NYC apartment with a rooftop garden with his husband, Rubem Robierb, shared a post on Easter in 2025 about having to rehome some of his plants because he was moving.
“It’s the last spring in the #rooftopgardenNYC ! I need to do some general plant care because all of these bushes, and trees, will be going to friends for their gardens!” he captioned the shirtless photo of him outside tending to his rooftop garden. Further on in the caption, he explained why he was moving.
“For those of you who ask why we are giving this up… We’re moving downtown to be closer to our new Disney Headquarters and I just haven’t found a great space with a rooftop garden…(feel free to reach out if you know of one in the financial district) ! Rubem and I will continue to look for a few more days, but we are just about ready to make our decision on where our new home will be! Happy Easter !!!” Sam explained.
Moving downtown will make it more convenient for Sam to travel to and from Disney’s new headquarters in 7 Hudson Square, the location in which ABC’s shows will be filmed in state-of-the-art studios.
“This new complex, which serves as a collaborative town square in the bustling city, has already started welcoming employees, and by next summer will officially be home to news, editorial, live productions, streaming, technology, advertising, corporate, business support functions, and more,” the building’s official website said.
Sam Champion Shared an Update on Moving
In a subsequent Instagram Video in April 2025, Sam shared that he and Rubem were looking at a bunch of properties around the city.
“Rubem and I did the real estate hunt all weekend long. We’ve got more appointments this morning, but I feel like we’ve narrowed it down to some good options,” he said while in the car on his way to GMA. “We just have to work out what option is best for us and the future and what we like most, kind of thing.”

“The apartment hunting is going great. It’s a long process. I mean, you really have to look a lot, and it takes a lot of time because you’re moving from appointment to appointment and then you’ve got to see the whole building and then you’ve got to see all of the amenities, so it really does … It takes a lot of time. It’s a lot of walking, but we’re both having fun at it and we found some really beautiful stuff.”
Sam said that the good news for those who have to do house hunting in New York is that “everybody is really professional, and they make their appointments, and they’re really friendly, and they’re very, very nice.” He gave a shout-out to his realtor for his “guidance” throughout the moving process and making everything so smooth.
One fan told Sam in a comment that they were going to miss seeing all of the pictures he posts of his rooftop garden that is connected to his NYC apartment. The meteorologist said that it might be possible to find a new apartment that will boast some kind of outdoor space for him to set up another garden.
“I’m going to miss it a little bit too. It’s not out of the question,” he said about making a new garden elsewhere. “There are some apartments that we’re seeing today that have terraces. It took me a while to find them, and I found them today, and some of them are big terrace spots, and I think we’re going to like the neighborhood, and it’s either today or tomorrow that we see them, so it’s not out of the realm. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility.”
