William H. Macy Ponders Retirement After ‘Shameless’

From Fargo, to Boogie Nights, to Magnolia, William H. Macy has quite the film resume. But it is his role as Frank Gallagher on Shameless that is perhaps the role he will ultimately be remembered for when he eventually calls it quits from the acting game. Which may be sooner than later.

The 68-year-old actor took some time while at the Tyson Fury versus Deontay Wilder heavyweight championship fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in order to answer some questions. More importantly, to answer questions about where his career is headed. It is already known that William’s costars on Shameless, Emmy Rossum and Cameron Monaghan, won’t be returning to the popular Showtime series, and William revealed to Closer Weekly just how long the show will last now that those characters are gone.

“I don’t know. I think we’ll be back for [season] ten,” William revealed. “It’ll be a different show. I’m kind of excited about the prospects of it. Although, I don’t want to work any harder.” And William may not work much in the near future as he opened up about life after Shameless and what he will do.

“Some form of retirement,” William, who has been married to Felicity Huffman since 1997 and has two kids, said. “I’ve been doing this a long time. It’s a great question, isn’t it? Sometimes after a big fat series, you’re kind of in actor jail for a while and you’ve got to go to Broadway or something like that.”

It is pretty common for actors to head to the stage after a longterm role on a TV series. Just look at all the stage work that Bryan Cranston did after starring in Breaking Bad for years, a show that we still have an unhealthy obsession with. So perhaps that is in William’s future. Or perhaps he will reboot ER. I bet you all forgot that he was on the show for 15 years.
